Seattle University APNI 2016 Applicants

Published

I thought I would start a thread for applicants to the 2016 MSN for Non-Nurses: Advanced Practice Nursing Immersion at Seattle University. I am applying for the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty. Any other applicants for this cycle? Questions and comments regarding the program and admissions process are welcome!

I had my interview for psych on the 30th. They said there were 487 applicants for the program which was substantially more than they had ever seen before. I was told that (approximately) 210 of them applied to the FNP track. If you got an interview for the FNP track that's a huge accomplishment. Congratulations!

Yeah, I knew there'd been psych track interviews this last weekend. I'm just wondering if any psych interview invites have gone out for this upcoming weekend.

How did your interview go, Oregonian89? Feel relieved to have it done, or are you all the more anxious?

Hello!

Chiming in to say that I got an email this afternoon to interview for Psych next Wednesday. It appears as though (via the online system) that they have invited five people to interview that day so far and there are ten slots listed on that day. That's all I know--not sure if they fill all ten or what?

Last week I started bumming on myself that I didn't hear for the first round of interviews, and I took the better part of the day to think/feel my way through to realize whether or not Seattle U "picks me," I pick me, forever. :) Meaning, if I am not accepted, I will still "pick myself" all the way through the fulfillment of my goals, wherever that is. Realizing this sincerely made me feel better.

Darn. I was so hoping more invites just hadn't gone out yet. Congrats, jessicainjune and good luck on your interview. Keep us updated!

Congrats Jessica! Let us know how your interview goes.

No_LiesJustLove: thank you for the information on number of applicants!

Oregonian89: How did the interview go??

If 210 applied to the FNP track, and up to 20 spots are reserved...I'd like to imagine that they interview at least 60 people. So nerve racking. i have heard nothing today in my email.

I've been rereading the requirements for the program and am really starting to doubt that I ever had a chance to compete with you all!

Good work, All! This isn't easy.

Specializes in PMHNP.

If it eases anyone's mind in the slightest, I have a friend who just finished the program last June (psych track). She got an interview and was first rejected. Then, they called her literally a few days after the program started and asked her to enroll! Anything is possible. Keep your hopes up!

I agree that we all should remain hopeful. Though, I admit that it's getting quite hard not feel discouraged. I always thought that if I didn't get in this year, I would reapply next year, but now I'm not sure. Having reviewed the criteria applicants are evaluated on, there really isn't anything I can do to improve my application next year. I suppose I could write a different admission essay, but aside from that there isn't anything I can do to better my application. I already have great grades, an extensive background, and my GRE scores were quite good (including a very high analytical writing score that should have afforded me "bonus points"). I am at a loss for what else I can do to improve my chances next year. I'm trying to remain hopeful, but I'm definitely having doubts. Boo.

All that said, congrats to everyone that has received interview invites. Please keep us posted. I'll keep my fingers crossed for all of you. :)

I hear you Pallas!

My GRE was just enough to meet the minimum (it was a bad test day). Writing is not my strong point, patient relations is! It sounds like you're quite the candidate, and I would continue to stay hopeful if I were you.

IF it helps, I'm coming from a Bachelors in Business with 7 years in sales/HR. I'm 29, have very limited experience actually working in the field, and the only thing going for me are my prereq grades, a reference from a doctor, and a decent letter of intent (which I'm not starting to think didn't highlight enough of my experiences).

It sounds like there is more likely a spot for you, than me!

If I don't get in this year, I don't know if I'll reapply... I could spend the next year volunteering everwhere, but I doubt that really will change much.

Also, I heard that this is the last APNI cohort at Seattle U. UW dropped their program and WA state is soon to follow the new regulation that NP's must now achieve DNP's....

Yeah, this is definitely a very competitive program, and I think it's difficult to distinguish one's self from other applicants. My background is actually in biology, specifically physiology. However, I've studied the physiology of behavior (including aggression) and have extensive work in the stress physiology, including publications. So, applying to the psych track wasn't so much a complete change in career choices for me, rather a realignment of my previous work and goals. I knew that my chances for being admitted into the program were small, given its competitive nature, but I was hoping to at least get an interview.

I performed well on the GREs, but I think part of that is that I knew what to expect as I had been through it before when I took them prior to my graduate program in biology. My previous scores were too old, so I had to retake them again, but even though things had changed since I last took the GREs, I really do think it helps to feel some level of familiarity with it.

I'd heard that the program was changing to a DNP only program, but hadn't heard whether it was definitely starting next year. Aren't they still going to have a direct-entry option for non-nursing majors, or is this it? I know there's always going the RN route, then becoming an NP via a traditional MSN program, which I'm certainly considering. I also have some other options available to me, but I was really hoping to go the nursing route as I felt it offered more career flexibility. Plus, this program was appealing since it truncates the timeline quite a bit compare to the traditional route, and at 35 I was hoping to be done with school before turning 40. Haha.

Anyway, good luck to you! I'm sure you have a better chance than you realize, woodlee9. I'm trying to stay positive and hold on to hope, but admittedly, I'm also exploring other avenues and considering other options presented to me.

Pallas, From my understanding: Seattle U is the last school in WA to have a direct entry to MSN and to be in guidelines with the State of WA, they will eliminate this route, but keep the traditional BSN-DNP. Just no more direct entry to masters. :(

It seems my stars are aligning to go through an Accelerated BSN program (I was accepted to Bellarmine in Kentucky) and then reapply to a Masters program next year. I think it will still have a 27 month timeline, just split between two schools. I was hoping to alleviate ever having to apply to school again....but oh well.

Good luck in your endeavors. It is quite nice to have this support forum.

Hey, just wanted to confirm that they told me during the interview that this is the last year they are offering the direct entry masters :( They said that may have had something to do with the huge number of applicants.

Pallas- You sound extremely qualified. I can't imagine that you wouldn't get an interview. Hang in there. I know they are doing interviews the entire month of February.

Do you think they take all like minded/background individuals? It seems most of you are science major undergrads, with CNA/radiology working experience.

I'm trying to find some hope that they see me as a completely different type of candidate with the same drive and want for this program....
