School's hidden agenda, "NCLEX pass rate: Weed out students who will not pass"

Published

The reason why nursing school is tuff because the directors want the students to pass NCLEX..They make the course work hard so that they will know only bright students will pass NCLEX...If the school gets under a 75% pass rate on NCLEX, the school will be put on probation...

I over heard this while the directer was talking to an instructor..

It's a big one too.

I am not saying I like the NCLEX, quite the opposite. Just saying it measures competency and doesn't necessarily correlate with breadth of knowledge, practical aptitude, academic merit, etc.

They still make dialup? :o

Aye yup, wehl. doughn't know if they still "make it" but i still got it.!

Bahaha! That was my exact same thought!

It is not fair in doing this..In my school, if you miss a day of lecture, you will struggle to pass the whole semester since you are down a lot of points and the lecture covered the exam...And they present too much information to know at one time..And they give these questions to you from out of the blue in the multiple choice test..It is not fair..In regular college, like general education, classes will not be like nursing school in terms of filtering you out!

What you are describing here is called nursing school. Also, no sympathy here for missing lecture. There is no excuse, short of loss of life or limb.

I know at my school you have to take a teas test, which supposedly gives the school a prediction if you are able to take test that is structured like the NCLEX exam. If all schools did this and looked at a persons GPA along with their science grades when picking their students, maybe they would not have to make the classes "extra hard".

This is exactly how my school does it. The top 60 TEAS scores are admitted as long as they have a 3.0 or higher in all the pre-reqs.

Um...hate to tell ya but this is every school agenda. It makes them look good plus, honestly if it were that easy, I would hate to see how any worse some of the nurses that come out would be. I've seen plenty that I have to wonder what school would let them through..?

I think you missed the point, that passing nclex seemed the schools ONLY agenda

If this conversation is even happening in front of a student, it is probably because the school is in close to that 75% mark. In which case, they should be busting their a$$ to get the score up so their students are not screwed. How do you think it looks for the students out there applying for jobs when their alma-mater looses accreditation. They are protecting themselves and their students.

That is an OPEN agenda at my skool, which is fine with me. My entire program, start to finish was challenging and prepared us well for the NCLEX and the profession.

What I don't like are the schools that do a crappy job of preparing students, then rely on an End-of-Program test like the ATI or HESI to do their weeding out for them.
