School Nurse Emergency Course

Hi Everyone,

I am relatively new to school nursing. I am wondering if anyone here has taken the online School Emergency Nurse Course and if you found it to be valuable.

Also I would love to hear about any unusual emergencies you have encountered as a school nurse!

Thanks and Happy Nurse's Week!!

I've never heard of such a course...:angrybird10:

Where did you see that course?

Send us the link please!!

Every now and again I review the ENA's triage book (Mr. Ruby Jane was an ER nurse). Every summer I go to the "school nurse update" put on by the local hospital, where I am reminded that an open magazine can serve as a stabilizer for an arm if I don't have the right size sling.

I have found that my emergencies are more of the asthma/anaphylaxis/is that cut gonna need stitches? kind, less of the bleeding out/mass casualty kind...but I review for that, just in case.

Mostly concussions and seizures/ r/o new seizure. My most unexpected was a TIA. It was in the first week or two of school and because of our switch to a new computer program (instead of health cards) we were not aware that the child had a dx of AVM over the summer. In the HS, its ODs, fainting disorders (POTS), and mental health emergencies.

I actually just registered to take one at a local hospital this summer. Can't hurt!

I'm in a middle school- most of the emergencies have been anaphylaxis (x1- epipen given right away), several cuts requiring stitches/glue, several concussions/head bumps/ sprained ankles, and one shoulder pulled out of the socket. We've also had a fair share of mental health emergencies.

I found this course a little while ago but haven't done the modules yet. Has anyone here taken it?

Thanks for all the responses. It's been hard to get back on. My training is taking all the mental energy I have but I am LOVING it!! Here is the link for the online course I found...School Nurse Emergency Care Course.

Also there are some traditional courses in a few places. University of Connecticut in Storrs has a 3 day course in the summer. It is expensive though. That's why I was wondering if anyone had taken an online course. I recently took the ENPC. It was all ER and flight nurses. It felt a bit intimidating at first but I felt good after I passed and it really increased my confidence in handling an emergency which is my goal for taking one of the school nurse courses as well.

I completed this a few years ago when I was first hired as a SN. It has some great info.

What do you do for the concussions? And curious to know what your intervention for the shoulder of socket was? What's some reasons you would or have called for the squad?

I can't open the link - do we get CEUs for taking it? How much does it cost?
