Hi everyone!

I am new to the School Nurse community! I am looking for recommendations on any online SN Certification programs for NJ! Any input or opinion is greatly appreciated!!

Eastern University in PA. It's all online though so you wouldn't have to go there at all.

Specializes in School Nursing.

ONE OF US!

ONE OF US!

I did my at Eastern University, too. (I'm in PA)

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

In New Jersey, a certified school nurse must complete specific requirements and be licensed not only by the New Jersey Board of Nursing but by the Department of Education.

NJ Dept. Education - School Nurse Certification

NJ School Nurse programs listed here, most are in person or hybrid: Certification - New Jersey State School Nurses Association

One program listed costs $54,000 ---- outrageous!

PA School Nurse Certification programs mostly online:
Certification in School Nurse (K-12) (Online) | Eastern University

Online: School Nurse Certificate - Cedar Crest College

Online: La Salle University

Online: Gannon University | School Nurse Certification

School Nurse Certification | Millersville University

School Nurse (PDE Certification) | Slippery Rock University

Yes, some programs are an insane cost!! Thank you all!

When a certification program costs more than nursing school does for a lot of people, I smell a...racket.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

Note NJ has TWO School Nursing Certificates:

The Non-Instructional Certificate prepares students to perform nursing services in public schools in grades preschool – 12. This endorsement does not authorize the holder to teach in areas related to health. Requires 120 hours of practicum

The Instructional Certificate prepares students to perform nursing services and to teach in areas related to health in public schools in grades preschool through 12. Requires an additional 120 hours of practicum experiences

The cost of SCHOOL nursing certification is a disgrace. The BOE ANd these college are making $$$. I was paying $2200 for 3 credit course at NJCU which is an online program. To complete the program It is 24 credits. So do the math on that! Why would I pay over$17,000 to get a certification which quite frankly you don’t really need if you have peds and ER experience to only get paid starting salary of 50k. ??? Im withdrawing from the college tomorrow as I have discovered school nursing not for me. Only perk is the summers off but if you like to travel like me you will be too broke to go anywhere.

Specializes in pediatrics, school nursing.

Do these states require these outrageously expensive programs to obtain professional status?

In MA, Dept Of Elementary and Secondary Ed (DESE) requires 4 classes offered through Boston University (around $600 total for all 4 classes), a certain number of working hours, and then you have the choice of getting a Master's Degree or taking the NASN National Certification Exam to become a Professionally Licensed School Nurse (and then of course you're nationally certified as well...)

It varies from state to state, but I've researched NJ, PA and RI, and they all have grad level (not necessarily grad degree) requirements for school nurse licensure...

Funny b/c I am in MA and have my Master's (I am a NP) and they wont accept that in order to get my professional license! They are telling me I have to have been working for at least three years full time as a school nurse AND have my master's. Super frustrating b/c I worked "PT" but at a Charter that had a much longer school day so essentially the same as at a "regular" school, but since HR has me listed as PT they cannot write a letter saying I was anything other than that. And now I am PT in my new district. So I will have to fork out the $350 and take the National Certification Exam just to avoid my initial license expiring in two years ?
