Scared to admit I am a RN who cares

Published

Years ago when I first became a nurse I was so proud to be called a 'nurse' I would have shouted it across the roof tops. The reason I came into nursing is very old fashioned and you are now criticized for wanting to help people and care.

Today if you admit you are a RN who came into nursing because you care about people and want to help them it is almost like you are blaspheming.

I read that only nurses who came into the profession for financial and career reasons, or because they lost their first job and have decided nurses is the career for them are the ones who succeed in the profession.

I don't believe it is true I think there is a place for both kinds of nurses, I also don't believe the ones who don't care are the most successful.

In my company you wouldn't get far up the ladder if you said you were in nursing because you are a career RN and that you don't really care about the patient. You have to really want to be a nurse to succeed and it becomes very obvious when you don't care about the patient or want to do the right thing

It is old fashioned to say why I came into nursing 24 years ago, although I didn't come into the profession initially as a career, I have had one heck of a career and have managed to climb the ladder to a dizzy height!

So for all those RN's out there who are frightened to say they came into nursing for reasons of caring or helping people-stand tall and be counted!

Okay, I really got in to nursing so when I speed, cops don't give me tickets.

Specializes in 15 years in ICU, 22 years in PACU.

Does that work? I tried hiking my shirt up just a little bit but it got caught on my stomach and I still got the ticket!!

Lies. I got pulled over the day before classes started and I must not have boohooed enough because CHP still have me a speeding ticket :(

Stethoscope on the seat next to you. Black scrubs.

Or white nursing dress with cap, just like their moms.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.
See you are all ready to shoot me down, so I proved my point

I'm glad you feel vindicated. I guess.

I for one have puzzled over the reason for this thread. If it's not passive-aggressively promoting the "caring" nurse who feels "called" into this profession (with the unspoken assumption of superiority), then I don't know what it is.

How's that workin' for ya, Ixchel?

Well, for general surgery, we have one who is 60 and struts his stuff like he's god's gift to mankind. We have one that is tiny, Asian, and talks fast. He's also typically irritated. Like, always. And then there is a woman who would write profanity-laden SOAPs about the idiots she works with on a daily basis if she could do it without getting in trouble.

For cardiac, we have one pretty little man who likely isn't into people who don't have a member. We have one guy who is the sweetest guy ever with a fantastic nurse wife and drop dead gorgeous teenaged daughters. There is another guy who I don't know that well because he doesn't really talk. Like, at all. He smiles, though. It's a little creepy. Then there is a complete "jerk face" to quote one hospitalist. That guy is the stereotypical doctor who craps on all the nurses, doesn't learn names, and couldn't be bothered with stuff that's beneath him. I only work with three people I cannot stand even just a little. He is one of them.

So, not so well. You think maybe I should try a teaching hospital instead? I am young (ish) and pretty. Maybe I can get some old nurse to retire so I can take her job.

My pick would be the irritated talk fast Asian, because I really liked his role in "Knocked Up".

Confession: this worked for me once.

I got called in on an on call night shift. It was like, 0200, I think. Got pulled over and the cop saw my scrubs and badge and let me go with a warning.

I listened to a really good interview with him on the 'Death, Sex, and Money' podcast a few months ago. Interesting guy.
