Salary to expect as a new grad nurse

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!

Not in Atlanta....I'm in San Diego.

Ours is $26-$29/hr to start depending on the hospital and if you are a BSN or ADN graduate. Night shift has a $4 differential, I only know of one hospital who offers a $2 weekend differential as well.

Check out this site and it shows you all the hospitals in N.E. Ohio and what their policies are on student loan paybacks and other good stuff...very informative.

So, they're paying the BSN grads more than the ADN grads? Is there much of a difference in pay?

Some hospitals don't have a difference in pay, at a few others it's 2 or 3% more for BSN and 5-6% more for MSN.

Well we have a postpartum nurse in my unit whose badge says MSN on it, I have seen a few others on differet floors that are also MSNs. A few of our instructors also worked per diem at the bedside and had their MSN. So there are out there.

Melissa

im assuming bedside nursing right? what MSN prepared nurse would want to do bedside nursing???????

Not every MSN nurse wants to completely give up bedside nursing (especially the ones who teach) because they don't want to lose their skills.

Gerri,

Do you know if the 26.50 is for hospitals in the City? I am interested in South SHore Hospital and wondered if you have heard what they start at?

Those of you with salaries in the 16-20 per range, how is the cost of living in your area? What is the living wage? Your wages seem a bit low compared to other areas. From what I have heard, the starting salary in my area (Boston) is about $26.50 not including diffs. That may sound like a lot, but the cost of living in this area is astronomical (average monthly winter utility bill $375). I am wondering if it all averages out in the end. Low salary low cost of living, high salary high cost of living.

I think they all should be working durring the breaks. Some the MSN at school need some hands on. To long in the class room old ideals that have not been used in 30 years.

I wll be making $26.50 days + $3.50 night shift diff + $3000 reloc. bonus in So. California as a new grad RN.

I have heard 23.50 not counting diff in the south shore area (Randolph to the Cape). Yes I have heard 26.50 is what a new grad start off with in the city. Except for Mass General where it is a bit lower. I guess they have the attitudde that nurses should be greatful for the privilege to work for such a fine medical institution  . They only hire new grad BSN,s as they are a magnet facility. Will hire an ADN with 1 year or more experience. Maybe I'll post a message on the Mass nursing forum and see what answers we get!
