Salary to expect as a new grad nurse

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!

Atlanta, Georgia. My friend there only got almost 21 dollars. about 3-4 dollars for evening and night shift-differential. Most hospitals here only pay around $19-21.

Far away from Atlanta like in Rome Georgia, they start only at 17.50.

Specializes in Adult SICU; open heart recovery.
The $35.00/hr is starting pay in the San Francisco Bay area for regular RNs, not travellers. The cost of living is very high, so that's the reason for this higher starting salary. Travellers make even more. It's not uncommon to pay $1100 to $1500 for a 1 BR apt.

Wow! $35/hr!?! I know SF has a reputation for a high cost of living, but DC has a very high cost of living too ($1100 to $1500 1BRs aren't uncommon at all), and starting pay is nowhere near $35/hr! I started a year ago at $24/hr; I heard that some local hospitals are paying more than that now, but I don't know exactly how much.

Its not stupid at all, you have a plan and that plan will work for you. Just dont stay becuz you are scared to leave what you know. You'll do fine wherever you go, dont get complacent and scared to venture out. But also dont let money take you away from your plan

I live in Maryland, and the wages for new grads vary from $22-34/hr depending on facility and shift; also the closer you get to Baltimore and Washington D.C. the wages go up. If you are willing to drive, you can live where it's cheaper and work where the pay is highest-BUT you have to like where you work and believe in the place or it's worth nothing; I know some nurses locally who work in LTC facilities who earn $45/hr......

Specializes in oncology.
I'm hearing around the $20/hr range here in south Louisiana. Check salary.com. I was trying to figure this out earlier tonight too!!

Hello, one question, the salary on salary.com, that isn't starting right? Isn't that salary quoted just the general populations average salary? Thanks! :)

Specializes in ICU, psych, corrections.

Salary.com was correct for me. The range it gave me for my area was $53,000 to $63,000. I will be making right around $54,000 starting pay.

Well I don't understand, mine says 52 to 62K and I just spoke to someone from our HR dept and new Graduate Nurses are starting at 17 dollars/hr. That's not right???

Do you get a payraise once you are no longer a GN? I mean, once you pass your boards and are working as an RN? I know that our facility used to pay a bit less (around $21) for GN's, then bump you up (to around $25) once you passed your boards. They don't do that anymore and start us out at the RN pay.

Specializes in Neuro, Critical Care.
im assuming bedside nursing right? what MSN prepared nurse would want to do bedside nursing???????

I will be a masters prepared nurse when I graduate and I will be doing bedside care...that is what I want to do...I am not an MSN but an MN so I can do all but adv practice...I plan to return to school and get my MSN but I want to do bedside for awhile before I go back...with my MN I only need the adv. clinical portion, (no research or other classes like that, thank goodness, ive had enough of those classes!)

anyway..........here in Cincinnati new grads start off at about 23$ (ADNs and BSNs) at some hospitals here in the area they do offer a bit more for BSN..but not much...

The hospital I want to work for is advertising 26.50/start pay with 2-3$ shift differential....or i could opt for a hefty sign on bounus and less on the hour...guess we will see:):)

I was offered 18$/hr when I was hired and just found out that there has been a rate bump and we are going to be making $18.54...I'd say that is a pretty big bump...and I like it! North Carolina area...

boy, would be nice to make what they start out with in Calif.
