Salary to expect as a new grad nurse

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!

where are you getting this rate? I heard $35.87 w/ $5-6 extra for nights from Stanford. does anyone know anything about rates in Portland or Miami???

In N. California, new grads are offered $33.48/hr. The cost of living is high around here, so that's the reason for the higher rate than some of the other posts listed.

Hi Jzprple,

I had seen a link that someone had posted on the all nurses.com forum, but I cannot find the link now. It was from a payscale from Lucille Packard's website, they may have buried it. If you heard $35.87/hr with $5-6 extra for nights from Stanford, you probably have the latest info.

Here's one other data point from SEIU, the union that represents Stanford and other hospitals in LA:

http://www.seiu.org/health/hosp/higher_pay/examples.cfm

- Some of the highest paid hospital employees in the country are union members. In Los Angeles, for example, union members at Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center have some of the highest wages in the area, including: $33.54 for registered nurses, $28.50 for radiology technologist IIIs, $24.77 for respiratory techs, $19.24 for surgery techs, $20.38 for lab assistant IIIs, $17.94 for medical records clerks, $16.22 for ward clerks, and $11.95 for housekeepers.

- In their first union contract, service and patient care employees at Stanford and Lucile Packard hospitals in northern California won guaranteed annual raises (a minimum of 3 percent) for everyone. The guaranteed raises replaced a "merit system" that gave management discretion to determine raises individually.

Hope that helps.

Hi Jzprple,

I would like to work in SF at UCSF or on the Peninsula at Lucille Packard, Stanford or El Camino. I am looking for new grad programs when I graduate next summer, so if you find out anything, let me know! P.S. Are you moving to Nebraska for school and then coming back? (I just noticed that on your location.)

Palm Beach County, FL.

The starting rate not only depends on area, but also whom you are working for. Here we have several hospitals that belong to HCA. They start new grads from 17.60/hr. TENET hospitals, on the other hand, start at 21.14/hr (all rates full time day shift with benefits). I also work in LTC facility as PRN RN nurse - 25/hr.

Specializes in Cardiac Telemetry/PCU, SNF.

Just to add, if I heard right, new grads here in Flagstaff amke around $21 and change (of course this is what I heard through the grapevine), which barely covers cost of living and isn't even close to the range to buy a house...

Anyone have a clue what rates in Seattle or Portland (OR) might be? I went a'searching, but didn't come up with much.

Tom

well I moved from Los Angeles to Omaha, NE for school this past August and am graduating in 2 1/2 weeks! I think I'm heading back to Cali via SF this time. can't wait to get out of this heat and back home! I'll let ya know if I hear anything great...a lot of these hospitals haven't been getting back to me so who knows...

Tom--I heard in Portland they are starting around $28-29 for days...but that was kinda through the grapevine.

Specializes in Adult M/S.

In Denver starting pay range for new grad c BSN is $20-24/hr, c $2.50 night $4.00 weekend dif. Cost of living is getting more and more expensive especially housing costs although I'm hopeful that the price of a house has topped out and the bubble is about to burst on the housing market here.

Tom,

Try looking at legacyhealth. Legacy includes Good Samaritan in NW Portland (the area I love!), Emanuel Hospital, Mount Hood, Meridian Park, and the newest hospital in Vancouver, WA, Salmon Creek. The website shows salary ranges. A new graduate would start at $24.95 plus shift differential.

Providence Health is also another hospital chain in Portland. It includes St. Vincent Medical Center in Beaverton/Portland area. Others are in SE Portland, Newburg, OR, and Seaside, OR (on the ocean). Their pay rates are also on their website. They start new grads at $23.99 plus shift differential.

OHSU is another hospital in the area. They do not post their salary on their website. Rumor has it they pay a little lower in base salary but make up for it in shift differential and benefits.

I don't know how well you are familiar with Portland, but if you have additional questions, just let me know. Hubby and I used to live their for several years and loved it! The only reason I'm in the midwest now was b/c of nursing school. I plan on getting experience here and then make a move back to Portland. I would highly recommend Portland!

Personally, I'm looking at Samaritan Health that has hospitals in Lincoln City, OR and Newport. Both of these hospitals are on the coast. They offer relocation and sign-on's.

Hope this helps!

At Riverpark Hospital in Mcminnville, TN they recently offered a new grad RN a little over $15/hr.

I'm making $17 as an LPN.

Sad.

Edited to add I'm not making $17/hr at Riverpark, but doing homecare. I'd almost hate to hear what they are paying LPN's (when they are not trying to get rid of them).

It isn't that simple, Geo, we can't give you any magic concrete numbers. As you know, here in the states there are many areas an RN can work. Depending on what you decide you can just about bet on being able to find a job making from $17-$25 an hour. Some places (like the hospital I described above) will try to get you to work for basically nothing but you won't have to settle for that if you are willing to shop around a little.
