Salary to expect as a new grad nurse

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!

It isn't that simple, Geo, we can't give you any magic concrete numbers. As you know, here in the states there are many areas an RN can work. Depending on what you decide you can just about bet on being able to find a job making from $17-$25 an hour. Some places (like the hospital I described above) will try to get you to work for basically nothing but you won't have to settle for that if you are willing to shop around a little.

thanks lp! It looks like i will foun out what i'l be making at the moment when i will sign my contract. i just hope that i will be able to support my famyli once i will be there in the states!

Your RN salary won't put you in a luxury car and a big fancy house but you should be able to live reasonably well.

I am a new grad and live in Atlanta. Most hospitals pay between 18.50-24 $ an hour. Of course the northeastern US and California pay more because of the cost of living. Only one hospital offered a sign on and some paid loans.

Specializes in Cardiac Telemetry/PCU, SNF.
Tom,

Try looking at legacyhealth. Legacy includes Good Samaritan in NW Portland (the area I love!), Emanuel Hospital, Mount Hood, Meridian Park, and the newest hospital in Vancouver, WA, Salmon Creek. The website shows salary ranges. A new graduate would start at $24.95 plus shift differential.

Providence Health is also another hospital chain in Portland. It includes St. Vincent Medical Center in Beaverton/Portland area. Others are in SE Portland, Newburg, OR, and Seaside, OR (on the ocean). Their pay rates are also on their website. They start new grads at $23.99 plus shift differential.

OHSU is another hospital in the area. They do not post their salary on their website. Rumor has it they pay a little lower in base salary but make up for it in shift differential and benefits.

I don't know how well you are familiar with Portland, but if you have additional questions, just let me know. Hubby and I used to live their for several years and loved it! The only reason I'm in the midwest now was b/c of nursing school. I plan on getting experience here and then make a move back to Portland. I would highly recommend Portland!

Personally, I'm looking at Samaritan Health that has hospitals in Lincoln City, OR and Newport. Both of these hospitals are on the coast. They offer relocation and sign-on's.

Hope this helps!

Sure does. I saw the rates on the sites and was curious if they were true. I'm an old NW native in exile in AZ and planning to go back so I know the area well. If you're looking at the Coast, I saw a posting for Legacy (if memory serves) at Seaside. Thanks for the info though!

Specializes in SICU.

Just took a job in Boston, MA. I will be salaried at $57,000 a year + paid OT, which works out to about 27 and change an hour. Not bad for a new grad!!

Specializes in ACNP-BC.

I'm working at a large teaching hospital in central Mass. On the second shift I'm making $23.75/hour right now-& our nurses' union is about to pass a $2/hour increase in pay in the next two months-so I'll be making $25.75/hour during the week & $26.75/hour on weekends. I'm getting so excited thinking about it! :) I've only been a practicing RN for two weeks now & am having so much fun so far. :)

Does anyone know what is the catch behind Tenets $20,000 sign-on bonus for new grads? Thats an awful lot of cash to be offering to new grads, and given Tenet's shady reputation for its horrible treatment of nurses...

I think you may have answered your own question, Tony.

Hi, I live in lithonia and I am in school doing my preq's for nursing. I have searched a lot of hospital's from Marietta to Macon. So, far one hospital that pays well and gives a sign on bonus is Kennestone Hospital which is in Marietta, Ga. One thing about living here is, to get paid well you really have to go out of the area.

Have you thought about doing traveling nursing? I know quite a few nurses that are doing or have done it. They make start with at least $33.00 to $50.00 an hour. They do not have to take call or work on the weekends(depends on specialty you are in) and they are paid for 40 hours even if they work only 24(Contracter gurantee). All the nurses I know have been doing the OR.

Carmecia,

I've never heard of any travel agency that hires new grads. Their business is temporary placement of *experienced* nurses, and they usually ask for at least a year or two of experience before they will even consider you.

These friends of yours, are they new grads? I'd be very surprised if they are.

T.

No, they are not new grad's! Sorry, I did not mean to imply that! They have been nurses for years. No, traveling agencies do not hire new grad's and yes, you do have to have at least 6 months to an year experience.
