Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!
are we talking about graduate education pay? like as an advanced practice nurse ie NP or CNS... around 30 sounds really low considering my father who onlyhas his associates degree makes over 30 dollars an hour and has only been a nurse for 3 year... does this make sense...Please someone clear this up for me before I start screaming for taking out over $80,000 for a graduate education when I could make the same pay as an RN with an assoc degree...
BCzito,
"New graduates" in this thread are not Masters degree nurses but nurses who've recently graduated from a BSN or ADN nursing program.
I don't know of any place, even in Florida, where NPs make $30 an hour. Where I've seen recruitments ads for NPs its always for more than that. Of course, it could be lower if the job is with a government-sponsored clinic. Here in NY, NPs usually start somewhere in the high $70s, but I've heard that most make somewhere around the mid to high $80s. Perhaps there are others who make even more. Clinical Nurse Specialists probably make a bit less. I'm sure it varies according to which part of the country you're in. True, there are BSN and ADN RNs who, between travelling and working per diem or regular OT, earn more than some NPs and CNSs, but there are other benefits to higher education besides earnings potential. :)

The questions are: where does your Dad work, major metro area with high cost of living? Also, does he work nights and weekends to boost his hourly. Is he full time salaried with benefits or does he work as a contractor or per diem
Hi Everyone,I am curious to know what a new grad's starting salary is in NYC?
Thanks
Depends on which burough of NYC, what type of setting, which specialty area if any, what shift. Sloan Kettering, E 66th is one of the highest pay rates around due to the oncology specialty.
Check the major newspapers on Sunday, NY times the best for classifieds on Sunday.

My orientation in the NICU was 22 weeks.. I love my job.. doing well on my own and learning so much about sick babies! Great place to work. I'll give you a hint tho.. many nurses leave the regular peds floors to work in the NICU..
CPMC in San Francisco starts new graduates out at $40 /hour plus pay diff for evenings, nights and weekends. That is the highest I have seen anywhere. The cost of living is pretty bad there if you want to buy a place but if you rent and don't mind a roommate you can find a place for less than $1000/month. Most 1 bedroom apt. run about 1200-1400 per month. With the higher cost of living however, you do the math, you come out better than $20.00/hour somewhere else. Of course, other things to factor in... kids and family. It might be a little harder to manage if you have a family.

That's amazing! And I thought Stanford was high at $35/hr for new grads. I was wondering what the new grad orientation program was like. How long is it and what areas do they orient new grads in? Do they have a set time every year to take new grads? (I know Stanford, Lucille Packard and UCSF have definite orientation dates twice a year.) Which unit do you work in? Thanks loads!
