Hi I am looking for some advice from some senior nurses: Here it goes it was my 2nd day in a level three nicu... the assignment that was given to me i thought was inappropriate the baby was a term unstable cardiac, dialysis, weaning on milirone drip, weaning off a vent onto cpap(which I totally didn't understand.) On top of all this a preceptor that wanted my meds given at the given time on the dot, making a comment that my lasix was already 7 min. late and she was serious. I was so overwhelmed and frankly I didn't learn a thing because it was so chaotic. As a new grad would I have been able to refuse the assignment or just go with what they gave me. Thanks, Keysha

To get drips per a mininue first find out what it is for ml/hr: 1.) volume/given hours 2.) hourly volume/60 x drop factor

I have been a employee at UCLA for 5 years as a LVN. What I have noticed is that if a particular shift is short, then that is when the rotating shifts apply. It also goes by senority. A nurse that has been there for 5 years vs. a new grad, well of course the new grad will have to do the night shifts. Most of the time you get the shift that you request like I mentioned before it only applies when a shift is short.

I'm in my 2nd semester of an ADN program. If the hospital you work at has 12hr shifts try to only work two days a week. This allows you to work, spend time with your family and study. I f you don't have to don't burn yourself out because you really want to do well.
