40's a little too late?

Hello,

I have searched the Internet and this forum but didn't find my answer. I am 41 years old, not a nurse yet but applying in May '16. Now if accepted in the program, I figured I would be 43-44 when graduating. My son is going into the air force and I am interested to be a nurse in the Air force or Navy. Would I be to old to join as a Nurse? If not, would I have to go through the same training as someone enlisting with no degree? Do you get the same benefits as someone just enlisting?

I believe the oldest you can be to join the Air Force is 39, but wasn't sure if it is different if you joined as a nurse? Or if you're considered a civilian nurse and in that case there isn't any age requirements?

Please forgive me if these questions have been answered before.

The age limit for Navy nurse is 41, also you need a BSN for any branch of the military. If you search the threads here, you will find out it is very competitive.

As of today it would be difficult to get a age waiver. By the time you have your BSN it might change.

Air Force will take nurses to age 48. You should talk to a Health Professions recruiter.

If they do I still believe it's with a age waiver since you have to get your 20 years of service in by age 62.

Contact a Recruiter for the Branches of Service you are interested in directly. They, better than anyone, would know what the current requirements are.

I believe this is for reserve and guard, but true. I personally can attest.

All the above is probably correct HOWEVER I entered the VA as an RN at age 47 and almost did not pass my physical because of my old eyes! I did not wear glasses my entire life until middle age hit. Now I have to wear readers and nearly failed my entry physical. Btw, the physical I had for the VA job was the most thorough physical I have had my entire life. If you have any age related issues think twice about going through the grueling application process. I was 95% finished until the eye exam and only passed because the ARNP allowed me to wear my contacts (readers) for the near vision, and remove my contacts for the far vision exam. Make sure your weight and height appropriate, you can bend twist and lift, and if you need glasses be sure you are as close to 20/20 corrected as possible. Oh and they do a full blood work up so be sure you are very healthy before you even apply!
