Ya'll, I can't even begin to imagine the pain the parents are dealing with. My heart hurts for the teacher, admin, and, of course, the school nurse. Four of five years of my school nursing career have been spent at the elementary school level and I've never seen a fight where a child was injured beyond a scratch or a bruise. I guess no one is immune.

I don't even know where to begin with my feelings about this- 5th grade?! We know we can't hold children's hands forever, so we try to raise them to become independent, to speak up for themselves, to treat others the way they'd want to be treated, and they literally die for it.
My heart is so sad for both girls- both the one who died at age 10, and the one who at age 10 was coming from God knows what kind of upbringing to think she could bully a child to death. People have got to find a way to come together and work it out, or else this won't be the last incident we hear about.

What in the same of Sam Hill is going on with these schools? How do they learn NOTHING about preventing bullying? Do nothing but put up goofy slogans?
Perhaps I'd better shut up or I'll go on forever...

I just can't - How does a fifth grader hit another fifth grader hard enough to knock her unconscious? How does a fifth grader bring to class something significant enough to knock someone unconscious? At the high school level this never happened in the seven years I had to put out fights.
Horrible, horrible story.

Wow, that is a travesty.
I'm a firm believer that schools need more discipline. Back in my day there was even an occasional paddling. There were no school shootings and a better behaved society.
The schools need the tools to enforce anti-bullying measures.
Another positive from my youth was that our recesses consisted of structured games in which everyone participated unless they misbehaved. We were overseen by 'Coach', a strong, male authority figure whom we all respected.

There is no real discipline in public school. Effective discipline involves pain; physical or emotional. NO discipline in public school now is physically or emotionally painful to the segment of the student population that need discipline the most...lunch detention...now THAT will scare you straight! ? How about ISS (In School Detention), where you get the full attention of a one on one monitor all day - like a day at the spa...that'll do it!!??

I agree with you about schools needing the tools to enforce anti-bullying measures. My school became No Place for Hate last year. It is very important to make sure our students are safe and respected. Also, we can immediate action when a issue arises.
Sorry to burst your bubble but during your day there were bullies, students killing students and society wasn't better behaved. With technology and the stories the news covers we are more aware of the issues happening in schools.
Although we'll never know...it's highly likely the student who did the beating has a discipline history as long as your arm.

I feel that mother's frustration, if not her pain (I can't even imagine). My 3rd grade daughter is bullied by a group of boys. She has been knocked down and hit (thank God only once). I know the school is doing what they are supposed to, but as a parent I feel like it should be more than a few lost recesses. Fortunately the yard duties keep an eye out and if any of the boys start heading in her direction they redirect them. She talks to me and we have her in counseling. The boys have finally figured out that I'm the nurse and I'm at the school a couple of days a week, so it's getting better. Although I have to say it is difficult to be objective and "professional" when I have to see these kids because I know they are hurting my daughter emotionally, but I remember I am the adult and these kids clearly need a better example.
