My friend who's a fellow RN told me about open nursing positions in Iraq. Apparently they are so desperate for nurses there they are offering $200K for just 6 months.
Any info on this? I tried googling it but with no luck
I know, I know -- I just couldn't help myself.
But I DO think that working in Iraq as a nurse is a subject that almost CANNOT be discussed outside of the context of The War. I mean -- it's all about the war, "going over there," IF you feel compelled to do it, if you feel like it's a worthwhile proposition, etc. It's something that has many issues swirling around it -- and it's interesting.
I promise to refrain, but it's hard.
1 GBP = 1.99 USD. That rate has stayed fairly the same over the past three months. So £ 5,500 = about $10,960 in US dollars.
cheers,
So that being said, it would be roughly $132,000 US dollars for a 12 month period. Not bad considering my MIL is an Officer and she only made $45,000 for 12 monts...lol!!!
So it's about oil. Whatever. You like driving vs. riding a horse to work, don't you? You like the lights on, don't you? Do you like plastic? Do you like riding in an airplane vs. taking a covered wagon across country, or a steam engine train that goes 35 miles per hour?If our soldiers (my deployed husband included) went over to fight for oil, then so be it. We need oil to maintain our standard of living. I know for some, this seems, crass, but it's reality. Democrats/liberals won't let us drill for domestic oil, so what are we supposed to do? Does anyone EVER think of what would happen if oil from the middle east were to stop flowing? Does ANYONE remember that it was Sadaam Hussein who FIRST invaded Kuwait in the early 1990's?
Radical Islam is also something I'd rather not experience the effects of in my own country, as well. If stabilizing the Middle East is what it takes to keep it out of American cities where it would unleash unimaginable destruction, then so be it.
I think in 50 years, many will be thanking George Bush for having the courage and fortitude to go into the Middle East and get control of a situation that could have destablized the world. At least he's buying us time to find better solutions to dependence on foreign oil. Many friends are being made in Iraq as well -- but you NEVER will hear that story in the mainstream media.
BTW, Iraq is now opening up its oil fields to worldwide bidding. Seems perhaps its a country that could turn around and fashion itslef more in the image of Kuwait or any of the other peaceful middle eastern countries. Perhaps its a country that will experience peace and prosperity as a result of our occupation and will serve as a model for the rest of the middle east. Can you imagine a STABLE and peaceful middle east?
All of that said, don't paint me as a Bushbot, because I'm not. I don't feel entirely positive about this president for many reasons. My husband has been deployed TWICE in the last 5 years - and I've asked myself many times over if it's worth it. The cost has been high, but the cost of doing nothing could have been much higher.
If I could go there as a nurse, I would, in a heartbeat. My husband sacrificed his life now twice to do it, no questions asked, and earns way less than $200K per year. I realize he volunteers to do this, but honestly, why is it so many Americans would not set foot there and are so happy to let others do the dirty work while they enjoy the freedoms America has to offer?
:getting off soapbox now, thanks:
:yeah:
:yeah:
:yeah:
AGREED!!!
:yeah:
I also would do it!!!!!

Yea but your MIL is gonna get 50% retirement, pretty good healthcare for life and will always get to buy cheaper gas/food/other stuff at the Aafes Marts/PX's/Comissaries.

LOL, i agree with you on a few of those benefits! The retirement is pretty darn good, considering the way the economy is these days!...Healthcare (i worked for the VA) is not great but is better than nothing at all, and as far as cheaper stuff on base and cheaper gas, that's a yes and no...lol..gas is 2 cents cheaper (thank God!) and yes we do get stuff tax free, but i am a thrifty shopper so i can save more money at wal-mart! lol...as far as my hubby being active duty though...housing SUCKS! hahahah!
Anyway, back to the subject, i talked to my MIL and she said that she felt very safe on the FOB (forward operating base) hospital. The most dangerous part was the convoy's driving from Kuwait to Mosul where she was at. There were a few times that there were mortar attacks and that ammo did in fact cross over the barriers onto the base. For the most part the patients that were seen were hurt very badly and were stripped of clothing and anything else they may have had on them before entering the treatment ares. the medical staff didnt even carry their weapons while working the floors so that there would be no "accidents". She also told me that no one could just walk into the hospital without an escort. so there was no reason to worry about that. and the MP's (my brother did this) pulled gaurd duty 24hrs a day on any pt that was deemed an insurgent or whom was dangerous or threatened any staff/soldier ect. She said that if she was offered over $150K that she WOULD return as a civillian (as long as she could come home every 2-3 months to see family!)
now hubby on the other hand is a cav scout and he doesnt know who to trust at times, but its a very different world when you are a foot soldier vs. a nurse. my MIL never left the safety of the base, my hubby left every day for missions.
that being said i still would go as long as i had either my husband or family here to care for my kids.

my highlight in red to quote above , am i being paranoid , why is there a reference to a dod hospital in iran ,thats news to me and probably the iranians . or has somebody lnadvertenly let the cat out of the bag .
i am truly sorry if this takes this thread off track again but that part of the quote leapt out at me .
as to nursing in iraq , if you have no commitments , are willing to put your life at risk caring for everyone who comes into your facility , then go for it .me i sure as heck aint going wife three kids
ok just re-read what you wrote...i do believe there is a military treatment hospital in Iran..i will have to call my MIL to confirm this, but i know there are hospitals set up all over Iraq, Kuwait, Afgahnistan ect
Thank you for researching this more, hope your MIL can enlighten us more, I hope the reference to Iran was simply a typo or some such error .
As to possible US hospital type facility in Iran , think that is highly unlikely , I don't think we even have an embassy there ( just went on state dept.site ,no embassy there our interests represented by Swiss Embassy ).
As an aside
Our troops have fought throughout there history for our ideals , because of there service we have the freedom , amongst other things to express our opinions freely on a BB like this , or elsewhere .Criticism of GOVERNMENT POLICY is NOT CRITICISM of the troops following legitimate orders. So whether you believe the war in Iraq to be legitmate or not , neither side can say it is right , and just because you disagree with me your wrong:twocents:
As to OP we seem to have disproved 200k rumor , best pay found so far approx 132k , tax free , but certainly not risk free .( wish our trops were being paid that !)
