very rude fellow student

I am currently in my 2nd semester of prereqs at a comm. college for their ADN program. I am taking A&P I right now and this girl in my lab group and I were discussing ADN vs. BSN and I mentioned that I was planning on staying at the comm. college and going thru with their ADN program. She said in a very condescending tone that well she was going for her BSN and that wasn't a hard decision at all for her considering ASN salary av. is about $30,000 a year and BSN is about $100,000 a year !!!! I just kind of glared at her and didn't really say anything b/c I was in disbelief that she actually was that misled. I mean come on, she can't actually believe that can she ??

It wouldn't have aggrevated me so much if I thought that she was just ignorant about it but she is the "know-it-all" (or thinks she is) about everything nursing b/c she already works with nurses in a clinic. So anyway, just had to vent. Sorry this is so long. I'll just keep plugging away for my humble associate's degree b/c that is the path I've chosen.

Specializes in ER.

I got my ADN in 73 and my BSN in 93. So since I average 50K per year, someone owes me backpay for the past 11 years. At the extra 50K per year I should have gotten for my BSN...hummmm that is half a million dollars plus interest....I could retire. Now who do I address my complaint to??????

wow is she in for a shock!

I wanna know where those 100K BSN jobs are!

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Whew - someone didn't tell me I should be making $100k a year either...totally wild info from a very uninformed source.

WHERE IS THIS JOB? WHERE? WHERE?!!!!!!!!

Smile at her from now on, while you think to yourself, "dumba$$" :rotfl:

Getting an ADN doesn't mean you won't get a BSN someday. It's all a matter of timing. All the more reason to smile at her and think...

Thanks so much for the encouragement. A lot of ppl this semester especially at my college are giving me a really hard time about going for my ADN even though it is a comm. college. Most of them are transferring to the university.

But I just politely tell them that just b/c I'm not getting BSN right away doesn't mean I never will or that I will be any less of a nurse. I plan on getting my BSN, just not right now. But I feel like bragging that I will be a nurse before them and getting all the perks that come with it but I know that won't go over well so I don't. Thanks again for the encouragement.

to let me know just exactly where it is that BSNs make 100K!?! I need to know so I can run out and put in an application NOW!

There is always a "know it all" in the nursing class. Just snicker to yourself knowing that she will soon get her come-uppance, and it won't be pretty.

Even the "know-it all" feels like they know nothing when they graduate (they are just the ones who won't admit it out loud!)

:chuckle

Specializes in medical/telemetry/IR.

I'm thinking of finishing my BSN. My hospital will pay for it. I'll only make .50 more an hour. Wope do Lets Party!

Specializes in ICU, CCU, Trauma, neuro, Geriatrics.

I have an Associate degree that I earned in 1992. I have worked as a flight nurse on a specialty transport team, did 6 months as a travel nurse in a Level I trauma facility in the Neuro/Med-surg trauma unit, worked in two different CCUs, did agency work in ER/trauma/ICU and telemetry, supervised a 325 bed specialty care center and now I make around $65,000 a year and work steady daylight. Could I have done much different with a BSN, probably not. Good luck, keep on plugging along.

just smile and rest well knowing she will have some very rude suprises coming soon enough
:rotfl: Oooooh yeah!!! Boy is she in for a rude awakening. LMAO.

I know quite a few RNs making $100,000 here in Los Angeles, but they have been working at the same hospital for over 20 years and are in management positions. As for the rest of us? Ha! Fat chance. Tell that woman to call you once she's making $100,000 :chuckle
