very rude fellow student

Published

I am currently in my 2nd semester of prereqs at a comm. college for their ADN program. I am taking A&P I right now and this girl in my lab group and I were discussing ADN vs. BSN and I mentioned that I was planning on staying at the comm. college and going thru with their ADN program. She said in a very condescending tone that well she was going for her BSN and that wasn't a hard decision at all for her considering ASN salary av. is about $30,000 a year and BSN is about $100,000 a year !!!! I just kind of glared at her and didn't really say anything b/c I was in disbelief that she actually was that misled. I mean come on, she can't actually believe that can she ??

It wouldn't have aggrevated me so much if I thought that she was just ignorant about it but she is the "know-it-all" (or thinks she is) about everything nursing b/c she already works with nurses in a clinic. So anyway, just had to vent. Sorry this is so long. I'll just keep plugging away for my humble associate's degree b/c that is the path I've chosen.

If a BSN made an average of $100K wouldn't everyone have a BSN? I mean, come on. That extra couple of years would be well worth $70K.

Don't sweat it. I can't imagine where she got that idea, lol. Maybe she's thinking of CRNAs?

No matter, she's sadly misinformed and will find the truth eventually.

just smile and rest well knowing she will have some very rude suprises coming soon enough

i know an ADN who made 120,000 last year...although she does have two different nursing jobs and works a TON of overtime! :chuckle

She sure will find out soon enough!

hehehe,, shhhh, lets not tell her.

Someone probly told her the tuition bill for a BSN could come close to 100,000, and she thought it was their income level.. hhehehehhe

god, i wouldn't want that nurse...if all she is in it for is the money!

Oh I heard all this while I was in school too! And when I got my first job, and my current job, and from other nurses in other facilities, from human resource folks (that aren't RN's!!!) and from even paramedics! I just nod and smile a lot! LOL!

And well...it just wasn't my cup of tea. I am a bit more conservative I suppose, I wanted to get my ASN because I wanted to make sure that before I invested all the money and time becoming a nurse..it was what I truely wanted to do...and 5 years later I am very happy with my choice! So far...ummmmmm, lets say nursing has its perks...but where I am working currently (which I hope to change soon!), it doesn't leave much room for self fulfillment or a feeling of satisfaction when I finally collapse coming home from work. So sticking with my ASN was a good choice for me till I find my niche and feel good about going into nursing (oh I miss the eagerness and hope I felt when I got my first job..LOL!).

I think many of my fellow ASN's felt the same way...lets test these waters while this opportunity is here, send out our feelers and see if we like this career choice, because as we all know..this isn't a career for everyone! I think with my recent unfortunate situation at my current employer I would have been twice as saddened if I had invested more money, time, and energy into it than I already have...

However...in a few more years, I may just get my BSN! Each year BSN's become more affordable to do, and more oportunities to fit into schedules for working nurses...and we are getting more classes in my neck of the woods...so gaining my BSN is becoming more of a possiblity as the years go on..which is rather nice if I chose to go there. With my hubby's schedule (paramedic) and a young child..that is very important...it must fit my schedule to a tee or it just isn't very realistic. Plus, my employer will not be flexible with the idea, and said that if I chose to go back to school that it would be best to go ahead and 'consider other employment" (their way of saying, we aren't going to be cool about it no matter if it benifits us or not)...

The cool thing about nursing is you can advance in it when you wish to as long as you put your mind into it and find a way! I could become a BSN, MSN, or even go as far as NP if I really want to! That gives me hope...hope that if I wish to continue further...I can! :) And have a very good foundation thanks to being a working nurse to achieve it with confidence (which I really didn' t have as a student...I had no idea what I was in for...but loved every minute of it!!!!!! Can I just be a career nursing student? LOL!!!!!).

But for now...my ASN fits me fine, and I will stick with it for now. :)

Seems like every nursing school has one of those!! One day she'll end up eating her words;) and man let me tell you the whole class loves it

The best revenge is to simply do and say nothing and let her discover for herself. Maybe (if you can with a straight face) say something like gee tell me more. I really want to make more money too. Maybe I'll do that after I get my associates degree. Ask her advice have some fun play with her, or not. Just don't stress over it or give it a second thought unless it is to play with her.

:chuckle Boy oh boy could you ever have a good time with this chick! If you are doing pre reqs she may not make it as far as qualifying for entrance in any nursing program. I am a second year student and we had alot of self-assured students (who had hospital work experience) when we started our first nursing classes started and most of them are gone, In the second semester, we lost most of the transfer students and a few LPN to RN students. I was just talking with another student nurse (Jennifer) tonight and she told me of a friend of hers that was beaning on her about her ADN program as opposed to the BSN program that her friend was planning to attend. Her friend said she didn't want to miss the University experience. Turns out her friend flunked 2 pre req classes but Jennifer is still going strong. At this rate Jennifer expects to have her BSN before her friend does. If you get your ADN, you could get a job and financial help from certain employers to finish your BSN.

All I am saying is that if she is so money driven, then she is not gonna make it. You will most likely get the last laugh! Hang in there!

Hi

Boy is she going to be surprised; At our hospital, there is a difference in pay from BSN To Diploma or ADN--$0.25 / hr.!!! Not very much difference if you ask me!!
