ROYALLY screwed by my school... Rant and Advice Needed

Hello everyone,

My school has ROYALLY screwed me over. In October, I got accepted for a 1 year ABSN starting in January. At that time, I inquired about a scholarship that would cover 100% of my tuition for my year in the program. I applied for it by e-mail like I was directed to. Well...It just sat in the staff member's e-mail box... never to be opened until I inquired about my application. SHE EVEN HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME THAT I DIDN"T APPLY FOR IT!!! :nono:

Now I am hearing that the funds may no longer be available. The lady who was suppose to forward my application to HHC had a very nonchalant attitude over the phone. IT WAS A 45,000 SCHOLARSHIP!!!!!! Am I just suppose to accept this? It is all her fault that my application was never reviewed by HHC

I am so :angryfire!

What should I do?

Advice please.

i'm so sorry!!!! that is terrible!!!

is there a head of the financial aid office you can speak with (in person)? print out that email so it shows the date it was sent, etc...and bring it with you.

Thank you IvyIV, I will be doing that tomorrow.

This lady placed me at a disadvantage and wasn't even apologetic about it.

The screwed up part is that there are 10 recipients for this award and with a 3.8 GPA in my undergrad B.S. degree, I could have been one of the 10!!!

I am mad and so very sad.

I am so sorry. I would investigate and demand an explanation in person, like said before me. Just so very sorry.

Have you left or are you leaving a job to attend this program in January? I would really think twice about attending this school at all. If this is how things are handled with prospective students, how much better do you think they will be with getting your info to your state's BON, transcripts to where they need to be, recommendation letters to prospective employers, hiring faculty, etc? Are there other schools in your area? If this place is your only option, just remind yourself that it's only a year of your life and count the days until you are done.

Boy, that's really the pits . . . . . .:o

If I were you I would see an attorney about bringing about some compensation. I would value your chance at a $45,000 scholarship at $45,000, at a minimum. Bring a suit against the individual responsible for ignoring your application as well as her employer. That amount of money is not trifling. Reminds me of the individual I knew who was not considered for entrance to nursing school because of reported missing transcripts. When she went to the office in person, the clerk opened her folder in front of her, and lo and behold, there were the transcripts on top of the folder, in their original envelope, unopened. At least speak to an attorney to see if you have a case.

No I have not left a job to attend this program. Unfortunately, this is the only program I applied for. Had I received a rejection letter, I would have applied to the other 2 "back-ups". :( I am also wondering about the organization of this program now. I will be counting down the days.

Thank you for your advice and concern.

I was going to consider this route, but would it be a conflict of interest to attend the school and pursue this matter? Before any action is taken, I will be speaking to the supervisor. I will do so tomorrow, as she was not in today. Depending on what she tells me, I will decide from there.

P.S. I even feel as though the school should pay/excuse my tuition for the year because of this error on their part. Is this too much to ask?

I'm surprised they accepted applications by e-mail for such a large scholarship. I agree that you should talk to a lawyer if you can, to see if there is something here worth pursuing in court.

I think that asking that asking for a free ride for the year as compensation might be a bit much, at least at this point in time. See what the supervisor says and go from there.

I hope this works out for you somehow!

I just called the office... the Supervisor is convieniently in a meeting. I was told that my application will be forwarded, but I am a bit discouraged because I don't even know that my application will be at least reviewed. Yesterday, she said that they were no longer taking applications, when mine should have been in more than a month ago.

Hate to be the downer here, but why are people so sue happy over something that is not guaranteed in the first place??

It was a mistake, thats it. Its also a scholarship - there is no guarantee that you would have been one of the 10 or so to receive it..is there?

I dont think so...

The school, although they made a mistake, is not going to be responsible for your tuition.

You should have followed up within a week, not waiting and then inquiring when its potentially too late. Numerous people apply for scholarships, you cant depend on the other person to make sure thousands of applications are 100% complete, that is your responsibility.

I suggest you look into other funding and just move on from this issue..

The majority of us have student loans..it sucks, but we all deal and pay them...there is plenty of scholarships/grants/loans out there, you just need to look for them.

Perhaps the school will help you since your email was overlooked.

Meghan, I understand what you are saying, but my chances of receiving this scholarship/grant was high. There are 40 new students entering the program, of which 10 will be receiving this scholarship. This is not a random scholarship application in which I am competing amongst thosands of other applicants. If that were the case, I would not be so upset about the matter.

I think we can all agree that "you have to be in it to win it", and since my application was "over-looked" by no fault of mine, my chances of receiving this money are low.

Mistakes happen, yes, but something should be done about it. Someone's error has cost me! If I have to, I will be taking out a loan, but this is NOT the point here.

Thank you for your input.
