Roll call Gen. Chemistry 2013...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

OK, had my first two Chemistry classes this week. Lecture on Tuesday and lecture/lab tonight. We're getting into conversions next week and I'm not looking forward to it! Anyone else have class this week?

So how's everyone doing? We finished Lewis Dot Structures and moved on to the types/shapes of bonds, linear, polar, etc. I have to study those tonight because I was a little lost. I did tons of Lewis dot structure problems so I feel comfortable with those, but now on to do more studying for the types/shapes tonight because we have a quiz tomorrow.

I hold an A currently but got a 87% on first test. There were questions on the test that were not part of any assignments or lectures. I challenged the teacher and he said if I though critically about the words and broke them down I should have been able to figure out what it was asking for. I'm not amused with that answer. Our tests are timed. I knew the material that was in lectures and I had gotten all A's on every assignment and lab. I think it's incredibly unfair to test us on material that was not presented in class. What is that proving?

I'm really solid on equations. There seems to be more vocab to learn these next few chapters, but still the concepts and formulas I'm solid on.

Chemistry test are pretty hard. I've learned that professors want to make sure we KNOW the material. I got a 93% on my first exam. We have our 2nd exam next Tuesday. In praying that I get an A. I'm just so ready for this semester to be over. There is just so much to learn!

Checking in with other Chemistry students.....how's it going? We just had our 3rd test last night. We were doing empirical/molecular formulas and I spent an hour on one problem bc it wasn't coming out right, I had to find the empirical formula first then do the molecular. Well after looking at it and redoing it 3 times I finally went up and asked if it mattered that the mass percent was over 100%, he said no. So I sat back down and reworked it a couple more times bc it still wasn't coming out right and by that time there were only 6 of us left in class and he looks up and says, wait, it's a typo, the mass is over 100. ***! I asked him that 40 minutes earlier and he said that wasn't the problem, but in the end it was. So I was happy I was the one that found his mistake but mad bc I couldn't e been home an hour earlier if he would've looked at it when I first asked him. So I guess everyone else just gave up on that question bc they were handing them in and leaving. I almost did, but it was killing me that I couldn't work it out right so I just kept redoing it over and over. lol

Unit 3 was particularly hard because of the quantum physics and molecular geometry. I enjoyed the Lewis Dot Structures, but HATED the quantum physics part. Felt like my brain was going to explode!

Unit 4 is much easier and a nice respite from the complexity of the last unit. Even though our class is Gen. Chem I, it is a higher level Gen. Chem than the other Chem (151 as opposed to 120). I can definitely tell the difference! I don't remember any of this from 18 years ago. When I looked at what the Chem 120 students were doing....bingo! I'm surprised the college gave me credit for 151 from my previous school. This is definitely NOT the same class. Luckily, I decided to re-take it since it had been so long and I knew I wouldn't remember enough to jump in to Chem II. Whew!!!

I currently have a high B in my chemistry class but this class is a tough one! We just took a test yesterday and according to my teacher so far everyone seems to have bombed the test. I have my fingers crossed that I passed it.

That's how our last exam was...everyone bombed it.

We have our 3rd exam on the 11th. So far I'm getting an A in the class. I got As on the other two exams. Unit 3 has so much information, I'm really nervous about our next exam. I really want to get an A in this class.

Currently holding an A in the lecture and a B in the lab. Studying gas laws ATM. I wish my math skills had been stronger, that's my only drawback!

I ended up with an 87 and although I did have an A for the first few weeks I was very pleased overall. Everyone in my class passed!

We have a quiz tomorrow over chemical reactions and I'm trying to cram them all in but after 2 1/2 hours I'm done. lol I pretty much teach myself from the book bc our professor gives us no time to understand what's going on. He just reads his powerpoints and moves along without letting us actually work the problems out. It's frustrating but not much I can do. I honestly don't even know why I bother going to class.

That is my pet peeve with college instructors. We are paying LOTS of money to attend these courses and learn and they can't be bothered to actually do their job and TEACH!!! UGH!!!! Sorry you're stuck with a bad instructor, that sucks :(
