Someone here asked me to post a review of Rob's CPNE DVD once I received it and watched it, so here is my opinion ...
It's great! :)
There has been some criticism because he's charging money for it, instead of posting it on YouTube or something similar for free. But frankly, I have a slow-ish internet connection at home (WildBlue satellite; we don't have cable or DSL out in the woods on the side of a mountain), and watching it on YouTube would make me insane with the lag time, plus I would exceed my monthly download allowance in just a few days. It's a large file, and would be too big for YouTube. I really needed it to be something I could watch while NOT online. He's offered it as a download (AVI file that will play in Windows Media Player) or as a regular DVD, which worked great for me. Providing both formats, along with setting up a website and allowing large downloads (lotsa bandwidth!), are not free, or even cheap; thus, the charging.
So I have my laptop set up in my practice room so that I can have the DVD going while I walk through my areas of care (AOCs). I have a dummy and all the lab stations in that room. I can post pictures of my set-up, if anyone's interested. It's kinda goofy. :)
Watching another student go through the AOCs has been very helpful for me -- the only alum I personally know did her CPNE in 2001, and doesn't really remember every nitty-gritty detail. So for me, watching Rob's DVD is like practicing with another student.
What Rob did was such a simple but smart thing! Setting up a mock PCS room with a dummy and doing the AOCs on a daily basis will reinforce good habits for the CPNE, and will make the AOCs very familiar when you're actually at the CPNE, doing the PCSs.
I give it two thumbs up. :)
Hey Lunah, since you've already passed the CPNE, did you find any mistakes with Rob's dvd? I'm planning on buying the dvd asap even though I'm not CPNE eligible yet......just for motivation at this point.
I think that was the EC DVD I was talking about, not Rob's ...but there are a few "known issues" with Rob's DVD, based on feedback that people have provided to him, and he notes these with the documents that he sends out -- things like checking the BP on the same arm as the IV on his dummy.
I made a dummy with Barney and stuffed some old clothes of mine that are way too big. However, I have three daughters that are much too willing to be my patients, so I don't need the dummy. I have a little pail with each AOC on them, and the girl who is the patient gets to pick out the AOC out of the pail. So far, abdominal assessment is their favorite as well as with vital signs. Besides, they have crazier heart rates to listen to than Barney does!
i made a dummy as well. i took a long body pillow dressed it with a sweater and sweat pants then filled it up with cotton and old newspaper. i wanted it to have a head but the only one i could find was a cabbage patch head ...so i have the big ole body with a small cabbage patch head...looks funny but works. this dummy is complete with
oxygen tubing nc
iv with 1000ml fluids and a ivpb
g-tube continuous feeding
foley with drainage bag.
i also tackle my kids they like it ..."mommies funny"....lol
hay i am thinking about getting robs video. were did you get a practice dummy thats a great idea i was just going to practice on my kids:chuckle
I did not have any trouble with him. I received e-mail verification that my paypal had gone through, and I should receive the material within 7-9 days...I believe. I ordered both his AOC and Lab DVD's...Separate times. Shoot him an email. He is a very nice guy. Only positive dealings with him. Traci
