I love vacations. I couldn't find any polls on this and was curious:
How many weeks of vacation do you get per year?
Include: Vacation, PTO, personal days, guaranteed off holidays.
If you work 3 12s an get 6 days off, that is 2 weeks.
Do NOT include: Sick time, CME days, holidays that are not guaranteed off.
ONLY answer if a FULL TIME RN. (LPN, CNA, NP, etc feel free to start a poll, I'd be curious)
Other questions:
Is your workplace permissive about vacations?
Do they force you to use vacation days when you are called off d/t low census in order to keep FT status and bennies?
Who gets the prime dates? Is there a fixed seniority system? First come first served?
Whoever the manager likes most?
How far ahead do you have to ask for vacation?
Can you bank it until next year? Or is use-it or lose-it?

Wow, 8.72 that's awesome. I believe ours includes sick and PTO. What stinks is I work a lot of OT, I mean at least 24-30 hrs a pay period and they don't give me anymore PTO for that. Wish they did, It might make others do OT. Sometimes we run short staffed and others won't work OT, because, other than time and a half there are no incentives to work OT. I just like the big pay checks, actually have come to rely on them, lol.
I'm not sure about sick leave - I don't think we get that where I work. We do get 21 days of PTO per year. A lot of people have been using theirs on call out days since I live in an area of the country with awful, awful pay. It sounds like most people in my unit don't really get to use PTO as PTO.
I get 3 weeks a year. This is my first year, and 11 months in I have not had a vacation because you have to put in for vacation at the beginning of the year, when I was just starting. This does not include sick time, as my facility does not allow you to use sick time until you have 80 hours built up, which takes a year. Overall I'm not complaining, three weeks a cation time is pretty great compared to where I used to work. Just disagree with having to work a year before you can use any sick pay when you work with sick people.
The only time I've ever had a WEEK off was when I was hit by a car and got admitted to the hospital myself. Typical: "No, I'm sorry ... I can give you Tuesday and Wednesday off that week, but then I need you Saturday." Gee ... swell. So then I end up burning PTO in 4 hour blocks during low census periods and when I move on to a different job, I take the PTO in the form of a nice big CHECK. Vacation? What's that?

*** I used to be on the same tread mill. Always using my PTO to maintain my pay check to same after being called off anywhere from 4-12 hours a week.
After a lot of searching I found a nice health system and hospital to work for. We are union, get paid decently, get 8 hour vacation and 4 hours sick time / per period and our hours are guaranteed. I don't mean that every nurse's hours are guaranteed, but my department's are since we only staff one of us at a time.
