hello and HELP! I am new RN I have my ASN and enrolled in a BSN program. I went to my first interview for a pediatric home health company the other day. They told me they would pay me 10$/hr for the first 12 weeks of training!!! I am in shock, I feel insulted, and I'm disappointed. Ive never heard of a nurse being paid that! after training they told me my pay would be 20$/hr working nights and weekends, but that even seems low to me. Has anyone ever encountered this before? As a new nurse I dont know if this is a regular rate, or a company taking advantage of new grads who dont know better. I was so excited to even get the interview, but this just doesn't seem right to me... help!
I would RUN. You worked hard and should be paid what you are worth. After I graduated I researched what a new graduate, in my area, and in the area I was to be hired in was getting paid so I was prepared for the question in my interview...but also so I was not cutting myself short. I would suggest doing the same. I honestly made more that 20$ an hr as an LPN and I live in the Midwest where the cost of living is much lower than where you live. I would also try researching the turnover rate for this hospital as well. You want to start somewhere that will help you be successful... it's more than a job.. it's a career and also your license.
Not all agencies work this way. One I work for does hence why I'm resistant to orient to new cases. The other one pays 80% for precepting/case orientation, flat rate for annual competency or initial orientation, if you voluntarily take a class to upgrade your credentials there is no charge for employees to earn 12-30 CEUs (such as intro to trach vent with hands on lab) but once pass field competency you may earn a premium rate.
It's not uncommon for companies to pay a lower rate for a new grad internship (which it sounds like you are doing as a new grad with a 12 week orientation. ) are you earning CEUs, are you getting trained in skills you can transfer later (infusion, trach management, ventilator management, high tech skills).
Do you have any other job offers?
I don't work for that particular agency, but I do work for an agency that used to be one of the top and the best. Used to be. They recently cut all pay across the board (well, except for admin, of course) by 2.3%, and took away Holiday eves for Holiday pay. But the worst of all is that there are no longer any shift or W/E differentials AT ALL! Incentives? What are those? Benefits? Ha! They had eliminated all offers of insurance until Obamacare kicked in and they HAVE TO offer it, and the deductables are absurdly high! Obamacare is their big excuse for all the cuts. You better believe the franchise owner is still collecting Big Bucks, but IMHO she is also rolling in *expletive* (organic brown matter).
Only reason I'm still there is other agencies are just as bad, and i am not young and starting out. Plus,I have some long-term cases of folks that I will not bail out on just because the world is in that hand basket headed you know where.
Five years ago I was earning $22/hr as an LPN on day-shift in an area of the country that has traditionally lower pay-scales than anyone else.
I agree with PP's that it is a raw deal, especially for your area. How can you live on that, particularly if you are facing paying off tuition debts?
I work for this office. It's AWESOME. I'm in the peds side. I can tell you, unless you are fully coded and able to work full-time at any shift this is the exact treatment you will get from most new grad positions. You have to FIGHT for work in our area and eat a lot of crap to establish some experience. I'm making much more hourly than that but I only care for the highest acuity infants our agency supports. The staff at my agency are spectacular, efficient and considerate. I've been a homecare pdn x5yrs, and employed by multiple agencies. Bayada is the best, hands down.
