I need to know if someone I met is truly a RN....myself and others we have a feeling she is not...is it anyway to find out???
thanks
Please try not to let this upset you soo much.... These people that pretend are obviously not happy with what they do, and are most likely hurting inside and often feel like a failure. I mean, if you didn't go to school (or are not is school) to become a nurse and your job is a Tech and you think that is all you will ever be.... would you really want to anounce that to the world? Maybe we should take care not to pry into other's lives. I am an older nursing student and when people ask me what I do... do you think I really want to say nursing student???? No, I just cringe and inside I can't wait until I can actually say I am a nurse. I do not misrepresent myself and say that I am a nurse... but I could imagine thta if I didn't have a future of being a nurse... it would be very hard to say "I'm a tech"
That doesn't make it ok for someone to lie. There's no excuse for that.

Sorry, I just don't agree with you. I am a CNA and work with many others who do not want pursue nursing but that in no way makes it ok for them to misrepresent themselves. This may sound harsh but the BON doesn't care what kind of self esteem you have, it is not allowed to go around and say you are a nurse just to make yourself feel better. And I don't pry into other people's lives, they freely say that they are nurse when they are not. It was not prompted by a question. And why on Earth would you cringe to say you are a nursing student, no matter what your age? Be proud of yourself for pursuing your dream and not letting it die. I am sorry but that sounds very sad to me.
I am definitely all for helping others boost thier own self esteem and I am always assisting my friends in furthering their education. I cheer them on and have helped steer a few people to classes and they have achieved their GED and go on to college. But that in no way makes it ok for anyone to declare that they are something that they are not. This just negates all of the hardwork that real nurses go through to get where they are. It is just a slap in the face to all of the nurses out there. At least that it is how I see it.

I totally agree that it is illegal and just plain dishonest to lie about being a nurse however it in no way negates all the hard work that we have gone through to get our degrees. I really think that feelings like this contribute to the nurses eating their young theory. Its as if since we scraped and clawed to get through school we need to make it as miserable for everyone else as we had it. The truth is that there were millions of nurses that managed to graduate before me and will be millions that graduate after so while I am hugely proud of my accomplishment I really don't need to defend my degree or expect a parade in my honor. At least thats how I see it. :)
I agree with the posters that said they feel sorry for the people who lie about being a nurse because I'm sure there are a multitude of reasons why they are not secure enough to be honest. Unless they are practicing as a nurse in which case the authorities should be notified I'd just ignore them.

I was NEVER ashamed to tell people that I was a CNA. I loved my job and I was good at it. Why would someone be ashamed of taking care of people? Just because they aren't nurses doesn't mean they are any less important. Now that I am a nurse, I am still not ashamed to say that I was a CNA for 9 years. That is something that I try to remind the CNAs that I work with of - if it weren't for them I wouldn't be able to get the job done. They are our eyes and ears. Being a CNA is something to be proud of (just the same with being a nurse) not everybody can do that job! It takes a VERY special person!!!:heartbeat
And on a personal note... why are you ashamed of saying that you are a nursing student? Be proud of it, especially because you are older. I don't know how old you are, but the age gives you that much more to be proud of! Put a smile on when you tell people you are a nursing student!!! The only time that I didn't like saying that I was a nursing student was when family members where in the hospital - then I just felt funny. But that's another post!

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one! :nuke: And I do not see how being offened that someone who lies and says they are a nurse is any way related to nurses eating their own. Someone who lies and says they are a nurse is not even close to a new "real" nurse. Those are two completely different subjects. But I guess you just don't see it that way and there is no point in arguing this any further. Oh well.
i have no idea why someone would pretend to be an RN
Because they are insecure about their actual position or title? I have had more than a handful of people tell me that they are RNs and I was later quite surprised to find out that they were either Techs, CNAs, or other assistants. It kind of irks me personally because I have a lot of respect for people in any position in the medical field but apparently these people may have encountered others at some point who were not as gracious.

Honestly, I am proud to tell people that I'm a Nursing Student. I get so many pats on the back, congratulations, and positive remarks when people ask what I am going to school for and I tell them to be a nurse. Don't ever be ashamed of the fact that you are working really hard to do something amazing for yourself and your community, regardless of your age. Being a nursing student is HARD WORK and you should be proud of that. :redbeathe

I agree. I'm completely proud to tell everyone that I'm back in school to be a nurse. Its actually kind of fun. Several of my friends have gone back to school after we rec'd our undergrad degrees and none of us have shame in it. I'm very very proud to say I'm a nursing student. It was a bumpy road to get here, but I'm savoring every minute of it. :)
