RN in school getting BSN and hospitals still wont hire

Published

Hi

I just recently graduated from Gwynedd Mery College, with my ASN. Gwynedd is a 2+2 program. I really want to work in the hospital on a Med surg floor, however the problem that I'am having is that alot of hospitals in the philadelphia area will not hire you unless you have your BSN. I just dont understand. I'am enrolled to start school back in the fall for my Bachelors, however they still will not look at you. I just thought it would make sence that people should still be looked at if they are enrolled inside a BSN program. Does anybody out there knows of any hospitals that will hire new nurses for a Med surg position in the philadelphia area and vincinty.

Thanks

Hey UT of A has a $8,000 RN-BSN program. What $40,000?

Gosh...I was thinking the same thing!!

Where in the World are you guys going to school to, that you are expected to spend "$40,000" in student loans?? Had anyone heard of community colleges and State universities??

Please do your homework before borrowing THAT kind of money for education.

Have you tried looking in Jersey or Delaware?

Philadelphia had 2 hospital closures over past 3 yrs along with ~ 1,200 new grads/yr in 5 county area --~ 300 just from Drexel Univ. Added effect of economy: many RN's working than in previous years due to spouse/s.o. losing work = Not enough jobs for all.

Tight job market on East Coast from northern Delaware to Boston area right now.

PA state university BSN degree costs minimum 60,000 just tuition if living at home to $100,000 if live on campus. Average PA Community college costs about 8,000/yr + 3yr wait list.

*** They don't want you yet cause you doen't owe enough in student loans. Once you get your BSN you will likely have a bunch of student debt. Nurses in a lot of debt are more compliant, less likely to rock the boat, more likely to put up with managment BS and tolerate poor working conditions. See if you are just an ADN who doesn't owe anyone for your degree and there are plenty of jobs out there why would you put up with poor working conditions?

That is, I believe, the whole motivation behind the BSN only hiring.

Couldn't have said it better myself!!!!!

Who wants to have to take Texas history in order to get a degree? JK. There are colleges and universities in our area that have similar prices to Univertsity of Texas. I have friends that are choosing to go to a RN-BSN program because they feel the programs are more reputable.... $900 per credit hour... $28K+ later and we will all have the same degree regardless of price. I would much rather do it for less than half.

And lets not forget they're counting on you working lots of overtime to pay off all those debts and not having the money to ask for a vacation. Once you become a nurse you are suddenly too important to have a day off, a holiday or vacation and when they are short you must stay and work 16 hours.

If you need to stay in a specific geographic location then your options are limited. If not then you might consider relocating to where the jobs are more plentiful. It was this way when I graduated in 1986. I lived in Minnesota and no hositals were hiring new grads. None. Many of my classmates left the state and went where they were hiring new grads. A lot came back to MN after putting in a year and found it easy to get a job in MN.

Nursing job availability is cyclical. I've seen 3 boom/bust cycles since starting this career. 5 years ago the hospital I worked in couldn't get nurses even though they were paying 10k sign on bonuses and an extra 10 buck an hour during the busy season.

Those times will be back one day.

I thought the magnet push for bsn was a requirement that all managers have a bsn not that floor nurses need one. In my area there are tons of schools. Most are ADN programs. I can't imagine that the local hospitals will stop hiring ADN nurses here or require every ADN to do rn to bsn.

*** There is no requirment for magnet that says nurses must have BSNs. This is a red hearing argument.
