RN Salary in Dallas, Texas (2017)

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I am moving back to Dallas soon. More than likely in the summer of 2017. I have been a RN for 3 years with a BSN.

I'm just wondering what the salaries are like for nurses in Dallas, TX? I am also wondering which hospitals are nurse friendly? I would be willing to make less to be treated well. Like decent nurse to patient ratios and fair schedules.

Also, I am considering working for an agency. Does anyone know which agencies are good to work for in Dallas, TX? And please give reasons as to why you like them.

Thank you and much appreciation to all who respond.:)

Hello everyone,

I know this is an older thread but I am moving back to texas in a month. I have had an interview and job offer from Baylor starting pay 31.37/hr $3 dollar evening, $5.00 nights and $6.00 weekends for the Float Pool. I have interview with THR for Observation Unit starting pay 35.12 $4 dollar evenings, $4.25 nights and 9.00 weekend evenings, $10.00 weekend nights.

Background I am a PCU nurse with 6 years of experience total. I asked for a higher rate with Baylor and at most they are working on 33.00, am I the only one that thinks that is a little low? Am I being to picky? Any advice on which I should take?

Hello Everyone,

I know this is an old post but I was just curious if any of you had an updates on the current hourly pay in Dallas. I'm currently a med surg tele nurse with 6.5 years of experience. I'm planning on relocating to Texas this summer. I'm still trying to decided if I want to move to Houston or Dallas. I read on another post that the pay was better in Houston. I'm just trying to decided which city will allow me to get the most bang for my buck. I'm really interested in working in critical care, preferably CVICU. Do of you know what the base hourly pay range is, for experienced nurse hired in critical care without any previous critical care experience? Or do anyone know how the base rate is determined? Do they pay for your years of experience in your previous speciality or do they start you off at the starting rate for the new speciality? Thanks in advance.

Baylor is known to pay lower than pretty much everyone else. They do have a good culture. However, THR has a great culture too, excellent benefits and very good pay. I personally would take THR.

With 6.5 years of experience you can expect to be in the low $30s per hr most places.

Does anyone know what the pay differential for nights/weekends is for a new grad nurse at medical city dallas after the 12-week residency? I will be working nights most likely.

Does anyone know what Long Term Care facilities pay?

What about home health Private Duty? My company already is based there(Epic Health Services/Aveanna)

Corrections?

I do not have acute care experience, and frankly,do not want to work in acute care.

I am not sure, but its an innocent question that would be fair to ask your recruiter. Just zip them an email.

Asking for my SO, looking to relocate to Dallas next year. She has 15 yrs experience as a pediatric CICU nurse, charge, and is now a nurse manager at a top ranked children’s hospital. If she were to take a staff role what type of compensation could she expect?

Thanks!

Hello. I found this thread very helpful and wanted to post my experience with interviews done last Fall 2019 along with insights from new grads

Baylor new grads 2019:
$25/ base starting out.
$1/ pay raise biannual
$6/ night diff plus
$5/ weekend

So doing the math for Baylor:

• At 1 year, $27
• at 2 year, $29
• At 3 year, $31...I negotiated and 32.75 is the max they offered me for an ICU step down position which I declined
• At 4 year, $33
• At 5 year $35

...........

THR "Versant" new grads.

I discovered what time of the year you join matters. Bc we do annual pay raise in April and THR also has a 4 yrs step plan for new nurses.

THR 4 yrs step plan raise

Yr1: 2%
Yr2: 4%
Yr3: 6%
Yr4: 8%

So if you join in February, the step plan raise applies at your year mark anniversary first and then the annual pay raise in April is off of the "new" pay so higher boost in base pay compared to joining in July where the annual applied first in April and then in July you get your step plan raise

Example:
February Melanie: versant $25 base starting out. At two years mark and then annual pay raise: $31
July Anna: versant $25 base starting out. Annual raise and then step plan at 2yrs mark: $28

It shouldn't be too much of a difference whether or not step plan applies first so Why a big $3 difference? THR annual raise is max at 4%. Most nurses I know received average of 3.50% bc of attendance, write ups, tardiness. So performance matters and if your manager has a positive image of you. You can get 4%. And If you have over, say, 16 yrs experience, annual pay raise is very small I have been told.

I joined a THR intermediate unit in February shortly after 1yr experience as a nurse in Austin. THR offered $27. I said no and told them I had other offers. Then they offered $29.75 plus relocation of $1500 with a 2 yrs contract. Contracts are tricky bc what if I don't like the unit or the culture is toxic so I agreed for 1500 since it is easy to pay back. I didn't negotiate further but you can get up to $3000.

For me, With the step plan <3yrs 6% raise> in February 2020 and annual in April: $35.19, marking 3.5yrs of nursing experience for me.

THR night diff 7pm to 11pm $3.75, 11pm to 7am $4.25. Plus Night weekend $6.

Weekend day diff $9
........

In case you are wondering. Nurse_swan is correct.
Starting out in Austin, Seton 2016 resident nurse: $23 base. Then @6 months into it, against inflation : $27. At my one year mark $28 something.
.......

Fall 2019 I interviewed with other facilities.

UTSW: 3YRS, $30 ICU step down .... the recruiter was quite snobbish on the phone! The tone was you should be blessed you are working for us. It was nonnegotiable with them. Bc "everyone want to work here"?

METHODIST: 3YRS, $32 ICU. Non negotiable "keeping up with internal costs and revenues"

Baylor: 3 yrs 32.75 ICU step down. Negotiable but that was highest. I heard benefits aren't as great compared to other facilities from those who left Baylor since they merged.

JPS: $32 PCU. I didn't negotiate. Night diff was less than baylor and THR. And Back in 2017 when I interviewed as a 1 yr nurse, they offered $28 base and it was also tier to what degree you have. IDK if they still do that.

I didn't interview with medical city bc too many nurses who left there has lots of negative things to say.

So I stuck with THR bc the step plan was worth it.

And regarding the culture, I asked nurses who came from other facilities and there isn't greener grass on the other side. General rule of thumb I have learned is avoid PCU/ intermediate day shift with RN:patient of 1:5. It is quite heavy loaded! What matters is fair patient ratio to nurses and also techs. But now in covid time everyone is working to the pennies with increased patient ratio.

Hope that helps those of you wanting to move to Dallas. Currently I sense that these hospitals can rely on new grads to fill up spots or new-ish nurses who accept lower pay that they aren't taking negotiations for experienced nurses. We have lots of nursing schools in the area.
