RN new graduate finding jobs in new york

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi everyone! I passed NCLEX 2months ago, and I am finding a HAAAAAAAAAAAARD time looking for jobs in NY. Anyone kind enough to share who'se hiring out there. Any RN job will do. pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.:crying2:

I've heard that alot of seasoned nurses are supposed to retire @ the end of this year due to something with there pensions and then there supposed to be a need for nurses so im holding on to that dream.

just curious... where did you here this from?

i hope this is true...

if this is the case...one would think that the hospitals would would start hiring from now so those seasoned nurses can pass on some of their wisdom before retirement....

I know that I've read news articles concerning baby boomer nurses who are "supposed" to retire within the next few years and that incentives are being offered to encourage them to retire but most aren't. In my family there are 3 nurses who are beyond retirement age and have told me how determined they are to remain practicing. Their jobs keep telling them all the different certifications that they need to do in order to stay relevant and all but pushing them out of the hospitals, and they laugh and say that they will be working until they are good and ready to leave. Hopefully not every older nurse has this attitude, but most of the ones I speak to do. They all tell me the same advice to continue educating myself, be involved in nursing organizations, and to have some patience because everyone has been unemployed at some stage of his or her career.

Is easy for someone to say that when they have a job.......

I have heard the same thing about things turning around in January. It is disheartening when you finally finished school and now can't get an interview let alone a job. I finally applied for my NJ license. I hope that will help but who knows.

I had a really bad experience at Beth Israel. They had an open house/recruitment session and the HR person made it really obvious we were wasting their time. HR person took all the new grads at once and took us to their office where HR person wasted our time talking about how they have no fax machine, they have a file cabinet full of resumes that won't get looked at, etc etc... and and btw, not hiring new grads for the forseeable future.

Why waste my time? Apparently HR person thought I was looking discouraged because they then said "don't be frustrated... you'll find something." Sorry, but I was thinking about the twenty bucks I paid for parking, the 8 bucks for toll, and how much I paid for gas to hear this person talk about how they wished they were back on vacation.

That's horrible of them. Did they specify anywhere that they were not considering new grads? Cuz if they didn't, that's just plain wrong. All the job posts I see from them say something like "Sorry, no new grads." Considering that they have a nursing school, you would think that they would want to consider new grads or at least want to appear like they hire new grads since they're an RN mill... I wonder where their new grads work?

Stay strong.

I heard about it from word of mouth. If they were advertising it, I don't know if it was specifically for "experienced nurses" like I've seen in some ads. I guess it wasn't clear since there were quite a few new grads there with me.

I mentioned in that post that it was BI, but I need to correct myself. It was Continuum Health Partners that held the session.

One assumes you are speaking of issues with The New York State Nurses Association's pension plan and it meeting federal mandates.

First let me say by all media reports, the NYSNA is working hard on behalf of it's members to secure the sums required from area hospitals to close any funding gap.

Next should like to to say that while in the absence of any changes to the nurse's pension plan by the end of this year, a large number of RNs eligible *may* retire in order to secure their benefits, I shouldn't get my hopes up if you are counting on that translating into any huge surge of hiring in new grads.

For one NYC is still swimming in experienced nurses well under retirement age due to the closings of the three Catholic hospitals and North General in Harlem this past year. Not to mention Victory Memorial hospital and down sizings of nursing homes and employment in non-hospital settings. On top of this there are more still seasoned RNs from New Jersey, Conn and the rest of the tri-state area who can fill openings.

Finally there are hundreds of not thousands of newly minted GNs and RNs flooding the NYC market from the score or more local nursing programs. So depending upon w hen one completed school and passed the boards, you can be going up against grads anywhere from 2008, 2009, 2010 or the new classes of 2011. Also keep in mind many of the "top" hospitals such as NYP recruit nurses from all over the United States.

I graduated in May 2009 with my BSN, have sent out hundreds of applications and have had only 2 interviews (I got neither job because I have no experience). It's terribly hard for new grads in NYC right now, I have been volunteering at a hospital for quite some time now and it has not helped me in my job search. I think its about time I really think about packing my bags and going to another state.

Would you be open to going upstate? My friend found work right away at Albany Medical Center, and I see that the state has openings in psychiatric hospitals, corrections facilities, and veterans hospitals located upstate. I am tackling driving lessons at the moment but if I was already up and running I would definitely head that way.

Yes, I'm open to going upstate and I have filled out applications for upstate hospitals as well, including some very rural places -- no callbacks yet.

Are they now? Because I've applied there and I haven't heard a thing. The same thing is holding true with some other hospitals in that area, which is really disappointing. The only hospital that is showing interest is the VA- I've finished my application and now I wait
