RN new graduate finding jobs in new york

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi everyone! I passed NCLEX 2months ago, and I am finding a HAAAAAAAAAAAARD time looking for jobs in NY. Anyone kind enough to share who'se hiring out there. Any RN job will do. pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.:crying2:

IMHO the NYC area job market for RN's will be tight for a very long time. Indeed a quick view of NYS's DofL stats seems to indicate this: Long Term Occupational Projections - New York State Department of Labor

Based upon figures provided by the above projected annual openings are about 1,950, with growth projected of 800 and replacment at 1,150. While these numbers do qualify Registered Nurses to be one of the "hot jobs" for the NYC region with decent annual growth Most Job openings - New York State Department of Labor to me it tells another story as well.

If projected employment openings (and note the data was not broken down by hospital, LTC and or other areas that use professional nurses), are only just short of 2,000 RNs per year, but the total new grads for the NYC area is about 2,495 (using NYS's data for NCLEX pass and total who took the exam for 2011 combined ADN and BSN ), off the bat you have a yearly surplus of nearly 500 new nurses. If you factor in using the same NYS data nearly 10,000 new nurses graduate each year, and that the best NYC hospitals can choose nurses from not only NYC but furhter upstate NY, NJ, parts of LI, and even Conn you've got quite allot of nurses looking for a rather small number of openings.

Added to this one must consider each year's surplus of new RNs who are not fully or even partially employed in the profession and thus still looking for work.

I am taking my nclex exam on Monday. I have been applying for hospital jobs, Long term care jobs, nursing homes, clinics, Home care agencies etc...

This is the new reality for nursing. Do not expect a MedSurg position right out of school. I am a second Career person, 30 male who completed an Associates degree. Though I am currently enrolled in a Bachelors and am anticipated to graduate in the spring of 2013, It is a touch market here in NYC. I believe persistance, networking and continuous effort by even walking into hospitals and clinics, will land an interview so that I can land a job by the summer.

If your someone who is not finding something and its been a year, moving or doing something else, like a certification as a CNA can land you a job in a hospital where you can have an opportunity to meet nurse managers and let them know that you are a great worker, will eliminate the barrier in landing that interview.

Please stay positive and hopefully soon I will have a success story to share by this summer.

Don't see why a RN would bother going through the time and money to become certified as a CNA since her or his license (and thus education) already covers and supercedes nursing assistant work.

However being as that may it is worth rememberin that even if a RN finds work as a CNA if something goes down you can and usually will be held to the liability standard of your highest license, that is a professional nurse. Meaning while it may be possible for a CNA to avoid legal and other problems from an adverse incident that occurs on the job, as a RN it would be presumed one's education and such means one ought to have known better.

If a nursing assistant takes vital signs and fails to connect the dots that something is happening with a patient that is one thing, but for a RN it's another.

Exactly, working as a CNA won't make much sense. Please keep in mind, jobs are out there. It may not be what you want, but something is better than nothing at all. My friend just got licensed in January and landed an agency gig with Promed. She also got a full time position with Housing Works. You just have to keep looking and networking.

I just sent you the NCLEX-RN Review Materials!I included some powerpoint presentation and I will try to send you the audios later! ( My laptop's giving me a hardtime eh! ) Check your email! Hope it helps you! God Bless on your exam!
