World Registration

Published

Hi all,

I am an irish registered nurse Intellectual disability, moving to Canada this year. I am having difficulty finding any other RNID that have made the move. I have contacted nursing bodies in BC and they seem to recognise the RN but in a general basis, and i am not a RNG. Or could i work in education? im lost!

Looking forward to any help thank you :)

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Unless general trained you will not be able to work as a nurse here in Canada. Regarding eduction well I think a lot will depend where and what capacity in regards to whether qualification is accepted

What exactly do you do?

Many of the members of the population you work with live at home with family or in group home type housing. The group homes are usually staffed with LPNs and unlicensed staff. Sheltered workshops usually have OT's involved with their clients.

I don't mean to be rude but do you nurse in the community? How is your population cared for in Ireland?

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

OK when I read your title I thought you wee a nurse WITH an intellectual disability.I thought you would have trouble finding work.

This may not be helpful to you since you want to go to Canada, but here in the US (at least in Pennsylvania) you could probably work in wraparound services (ABA therapy). It's usually work done by people trained in psychology, but nurses are also eligible. Most of the work is with people on the autism spectrum.

Hi,

To the girl that asked what we do! I'm nearly finished my training as an intellectual disability nurse in Ireland and want to move to Canada as well.. We work and train in community settings and bigger residential settings for children and adults with various intellectual disabilities and some with dual diagnosis of mental health issues. What are the opportunities in Canada for such a degree?

ABA therapists are masters educated in specific disciplines. In order to be a behaviorist to work with autistic children you need to be credentialed. The requirements are found here:

Eligibility Standards

Not many nurses elect this career it's usually those with an education, counseling or psychology background. Not likely you would find visa sponsorship for a job as a BCABA/BCBA without experience.

Is your boyfriend a citizen? Are you coming on a fiancée visa?

Thank you very much, I will look into it. No unfortunately he qualifies for a graduate visa where as I don't as I finished college 3 years ago. He is not a U.S. Citizen either . Thank for your help

You bigger issue may be finding a visa status that you qualify for and a company willing and eligible to sponsor

Thank you justbeachynurse, yes it's seems like the dream is over of going to USA unfortunately. I'm so disappointed. Seems impossible to find companies to sponsor you.
