RN as Inpatient, horrible and looong rant

Published

On top of everything I have been unable to log into the site. Here I am , minus a UTERUS!!!! Believe me when I tell you that in my situation it is better to be an ordinary citizen than to be "found out" as I was, as a nurse.

Deep breath, and sooo happy to tell this story:

2002, still suffering from heavy periods, cramping, bloating etc. Found a female OBG I could relate to who reassurred me that she would persue every avenue to help me thru this, did a D & C, tried the vivelle patch. I am 48 years old, always been underweight and anemic, no ther health problems. Finally had a bout of break thru bleeding that left me with a low crit, did an US, found numerous fibroids which had imbedded and were close to the cervical os, had hubby in exam room for options, she said a TVH scheduled for the 13th. No ther explaination given. Had a preop appt. on the 12th, she said "you need to come in early for an IV ATB for your CARDIAC INSUFFICIENCY" I said "WHAT?" she said "yes, it was diagnosed back in 2005 during an echo" I was nervous and upset but all systems were a go. Sorry guys, you have no idea what I have been thru....

So day of surgery, I shower, shave and had done the bowel prep the afternoon before (nasty stuff, don't advise) and packed up to go down the street. Whisked me off right under my husbands nose into the ROOM. The preop nurse says to me as I am following her, "OH! I see that you are a nurse, that makes my job easy! You already know what to expect!" She leads me into a room and says, there is your gown, your teds and sequentials, go ahead and get yourself ready and we will be back to take you to surgery!!!!

I am SCREAMING inside, I have no idea what to expect but do as I am told, no help even though I am shaking an nervous. Soon the nurse comes back, sits at the bedside and initiates a chat about WHERE I WORK, THE MONEY I MAKE and how I can refer her to a registry!!!! You guys would not believe the bruising on my forearms from when they tried to start the IV, at 1 point the nurse handed me the IV start kit and said, "Well, your a nurse, you can most likely find a vein". I wanted to VOMIT. I kept telling them that I was a patient just like anyone else but I felt like Alice falling thru the rabbit hole.

By now the anesthetist comes in, repeahs the same thing, shoots me up and the next thing I remember is being in a bed on the unit with 02, IV and FC. Hubby there looking totally flustared and hearing the staffer sya "Good thing your wife is a nurse, you don't need us anymore, see you in the morning!" . I was on an MS drip and so uncomfortable, with a gut like I was 9months pregnant, I could play taps on my abd. That and the floppy FC it was MISERABLE. The nursing staff IGNORED me, my MD has not spoken with me except to poke her head in the door the following day for all of 60 seconds, sent me home with no meds, no F/U UGH.

Sorry, long rant, hubby grabs a WC , get's me to the car, home, tucked up in bed, my H& H was low per AM RN, I am shivering, running a temp 99.8 per tempadot, not much spotting, aching now I'm off MS, took some advil, taking fluids, scanty urine OP but no pain, hell I've been on MS right?

Finally the pain begins. I call at 4:30 to my MD, some guy answers, I tell him I need to speak to my doc, HE TELLS ME TO TAKE SOME ADVIL AND CALL BACK TOMORROW!!!! I explain to him exactely what I had done!

You guys are great! Thanks for hanging in! About 15 minutes later a person from the med group calls to confirm a scrip for vicodin, which my darling picked up within a few hours. So as far as pain issues, I'm OK, however, I did not know that my ovaries would GO INTO SHOCK and I had hot flashes and crying jags at the drop of a hat. I called and spoke with a nurse at this med center who said it was OK to allpy the vivelle patch which has helped.

Today, I am finally coherent yet not resting, I check my bank account to find that this group took money out of my account in duplicate as a co payment for the procedure!!!! I called the business office and ONLY then did the business manager spend a few minutes on the phone explaining the post op instructions, namely that I am OFF WORK FOR 6 WEEKS!!!! I was breathless with exasperation and totally annoyed at this point when she said " YOUR A NURSE, I THOUGHT YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT"

So, here I am in testosterone heaven, my darling husband has no idea how to take care of me, my sister just took off my a much needed vacation in Kauii, Mother and Dad are in Palm Springs, I need some feed back from my beloved peers as to any experiences you have had as an inpatient. I am really concerned about the lack of follow up from this MD, I have gotten a follow up phone call from my dentist when I had a root canal, am I being over sensitive here? I am a bedside RN who does mostly med surg, my original posting is Haunted but I can't log in, your feed back would be appreciated. I may not be able to log back in to reply but I can read if you respond and I value your opinions, as always, Haunted aka Laurie Again, thanks so much for being there.

i can sympathize, post tvh i had a pe..i knew what it was when i took a deep breath and felt the pain...couldn't get anyone on floor to take me seriously...called the floor that i worked on and they called the surgeon who said it wasn't for him to tell the pcg on rounds in the morning...co-workers finally got a hold of someone on call and he ordered a lung scan which confirmed dx

when i went in for my six-week checkup the nurse told me i could start driving again ??? i had driven myself home from the hospital and had driven every day after that i would have had to anyway because everyone was living out of area at that time except 5 y/o but the point is they didn't mentioned any restrictions when i was discharged

on another admission i was given followup instruction..when i got home i took them out and found out that they were for another patient when i called the floor the nurse told me that it was alright because the other patient was given oral instructions before she left and i was a nurse i would recognize that the meds were not for my condition

I'm sorry about your experience - I had similar attitudes when I ended up with a cesarean with my last child. I had three vag deliveries prior. I am an OB nurse. HOWEVER, it is different when you are the patient.

I did get treated like I should know everything after the surgery - prior, my doc was really wonderful explaining the emergent need and all.

The problem with keeping my RN a secret was that some of the nurses who cared for me also went to school with me.

Post-partum was hard - I was alone most of the time.

Oooooh, I know that feeling! My OB nurses were my coworkers....no choice, our insurance at the time was not accepted at any other hospital in the county without a HUGE co-pay....in the thousands. I had a c/s also and loved the experience, except for the attempts at breastfeeding. All the nurses except one assumed that I knew enough.....all they did was tell me how to fix the problems but did not stay around to show me or to even see that I understood.

I too would complain, in writing.

I suffer from heavy bleeding too - just last night in fact I just about soaked the bed. I'm thinking about ablation.

Good luck with your recovery.

steph

Hey Syeph, I too underwent what I thought was ablation. I signed the consent for it and everything, went under the general anesthesia and all, when I came out I felt great, very mild cramping, mini pad for a few days and then off I went to Spain for a month, all without a period!!!!

When I returned to see my MD for my well woman check about a year later she casually mentioned that the "D & C" seemed to have worked. I said, "no, you did an ablation back in May 2003" she said "no, you were bleeding too heavily for me to do that, I just did a D&C" This witch had me thinking for a year that she had done the ablation! And I just remembered that!

So she has a history of non disclosure! Wow, I think I need to sever all ties with her and follow up with someone else in her office. Do look into the ablation before you do something radical if possible, I HEARD it works very well!!!!! Damn, wanna bet she billed my insurance for the ablation anyway???

I'm really sorry that you had this experience...When I know my patient is or has been a nurse, I pamper them beyond belief..My patient today was a retired nurse. I don't assume that a nurse will know what to expect because very few nurses have had intense exposure to the OR for starters and then there is the nervousness factor and the meds that anesthesia gives you can cause you to forget 90% of what you're told pre and post-op. You deserved detailed discharge instructions and follow-up as well as decent nursing care. I agree that you should let the hospital know what happened to you.:(

What a nightmare! I'm so sorry.

The last piece of advice is good but what concerns me here is where did the notion of CARE go. A little bit of maths here CARE/profit=0. Not that I want to be a Mother Theresa clone but expecting nurses to self care so soon after surgery is plain. Is there an ethical council/department at that place???. On the bright side you possibly got the best care by doing self care, well it sounds like it

OH you poor thing!! I cant believe that you were treated so badly!! It doesnt matter if you are a nurse or not! NO ONE is able to care for themselves straight out of surgery!! GRRRR!!!!

That being said, I see you have already been given excellent advice, particularly regarding www.hystersisters.com It is an excellent site that I used after my own TAH/BSO last year.

The only other suggestions I can give is to have your husband place a cooler beside your bed each day with drinks, sandwiches, snacks, etc. so you dont have to get out of bed any more than is necessary. Also, if you dont have an adequately large bedside table, an ironing board will do quite nicely, and it has the added bonus of being height adjustable! Place a kitchen chair beside your bed to use as a hand rail to help you get up and down. The Hyster Sister site has a product called a Swelly-Belly Band, that I whole heartedly recommend. It will give you great relief. Also, have your Hubby go by Walgreens or Walmart and pick up a thing called "The Grabber". It costs about $12, and is a Godsend! It will help you reach things without bending. One other helpful hint is to use the motorized chairs at the grocery and Walmart when you venture out the first few times, (and after that if you still hurt). Dont be proud! Who do you think they are for???!!! Even if you dont think you need it when you get there, believe me, you will need it by the time you leave!! So trust me, use it and hold your head high!! YOu just had surgery!!! Be kind to yourself!

Also, accept ALL offers of help graciously. The old ladies from church want to bring you dinner for a few days? Practice saying, "That would be lovely, thank you so much!!" Bite your tongue before you say you dont need anything!! The offers will be gone in a few weeks, trust me! Take full advantage while you can!! Along this same line, when friends and family come to visit and ask if there is anything you need, ask them if they would mind throwing a load in the washer before they go, or loading the dishwasher before they leave, since you cant. TRUE friends honestly do not mind!! PEople really DO want to help! It makes them feel good to do something for someone else! Dont take that from them!!!! Your ONLY jobs are to rest, heal, watch tv, read, take your meds, try to have a GOOD bm, and write thank you notes for every kindness extended to you!!! And believe me, after major surgery, those are hard enough!!!

I am sending you healing thoughts and will say a prayer for you to feel better soon. Hugs, Amy

Haunted,

I am SO sorry for what you're going through! I have experienced similar issues (had hip surgery and no crutches available at discharge!), and only found out about some 'not too terrible' hemorrhaging during my pelvic laparoscopy when I went in for an incisional infection and saw the RESIDENT on call. (I asked why I was having pain in a weird, new place, and she said, 'oh, that's probably from the sutures they had to put in after you hemorrhaged.' 'um, how much blood did I lose?' 'oh, it wasn't too terrible....doesn't say how much blood lost.')

I just scheduled a major ortho surgery for next month (inpatient 3-4 days, out of work 6-12 weeks). I'm in a new state, so none of my caregivers (except my surgeon, who's an arrogant ***) will know I'm a nurse. I'm seriously considering withholding the information *specifically* because I fear a situation like yours.

I agree with the other posters- write letters to anyone you can get a hold of. Some insurance plans have started allowing patients to leave feedback online on providers and hospitals- if yours offers that, get up on your soapbox and let it rip! If not, pursue every accreditation body you can- medical board, BON, etc.- and hold EVERY ONE of those nurses and doctors accountable! Personally, I think the doctor *and* the nurses are guilty of malpractice.

Take advantage of your anger while it's fresh and start writing. Even if you only brainstorm right now, getting it all down on paper will (a) help you remember all the details, and (b) rekindle your fire when you go back later to edit and send the letters. I know, from experience, that things can seem like too much effort later on- but you're mad as hell, as you should be, and somebody needs to face the consequences of their actions!!

Why on earth did you go back to that provider????????????????????????????

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. I think that being a patient for anyone in the medical field can be a scary experience. You combine knowing some or all of the worst case senarios with logical thinking being overpowered by fear and pain, it's just not a good thing.

Aww Ms Gooch, I love where your coming from but your gonna smack me upside my head when I say I have already done laundry, loaded the dishwasher and walked my dog every day. I am surely paying the price for it all today with awful crampy pain but I want to thank you for your no nonsense advice. It's pretty much me and the dog during the day and you all are the light at the end of this tunnel.

Intersesting follow up, now this MD is leaving messages on my phone which sound a lot like CYA, "Gee you know I am always here for you, almost 24 hours a day, it was Judy's fault that she didn't follow up with you A FEW DAYS AFTER SUGERY (Judy is a secretary) and you can always call me, I am here to fix whatever is wrong ....beep" . Well, this MD billed my insurance for an ablation when all she did was a D&C ( I found out about 18 months ago because she was evaporated after the procedure, ) she discovered a cardiac insufficiancy during an echo back in 2005 and informed me the day before surgery. Finally, here NP did a procedure which required here to do a dilation of my cervix and remove endouterine tissue for biopsy, which was performed without anesthesia OUCH and I just discovered that they were unable to use the tissue obtained due to CONTAMINATION of the sample!!!!!!!

I think, hands down, I will look for another PMD for follow up but I am in a terrible position, I do need to be seen ASAP for my elevated temp, which was high when I was discharged, my cramping pain, extreme fatigue, my H was I am now told at 9, dropped from 13 the day of surgery so this blood loss is going SOMEWHERe, sheesh, where do I start? I never need a GYNO, how do I begin to find one and what, if anything do I tell him or her regarding my reasons for not continuing care with this current MD. You guys are wonderful and I can't wait to get back on my feet and figure all this out, today was a very bad day with pain and fatigue. Did I tell you that the secretary from this office told me yesterday that I would be off work for at least 6 weeks? I need to file for disability and they only charge 25 bucks to fill out the forms. Should I have been told this BEFORE THIS SURGERY????? OK deep breath.....
