Riots in Minneapolis

Published

Remember when MLK jr said, "To further the cause of social justice go down the street and rob and loot your neighbors." Me neither, because it didn't happen.

I fully sympathize with the situation in Minneapolis and the death of George Floyd. I believe in due process, but after seeing the video I was sickened by the police officer's actions. He did not need to have his knee of the neck of a man who was handcuffed and held down by two other officers. His excessive force caused the death of Floyd. He was fired and he will be arrested and charged. There will be a court case and evidence will be presented and a verdict delivered.

That's how our system works. It does not work by robbing your neighbors and destroying their livelihoods. There is no cause that is furthered by the looter's actions. There is no traction gained. Their actions haven't changed policy and ensured that justice was done. It was simply a group of people who took the opportunity to steal and destroy for personal gain. The looters are selfish because they took some of the spotlight away from George Floyd and now the nation sees another example people run amok without furthering their agenda or making any positive strides.

If the looters actually cared about Floyd or the social cause they speak of they would take civil action. It worked in the past and it would work again. The Montgomery bus boycott changed policy. But it wasn't easy, it was certainly harder than breaking glass and stealing a tv. And therein lies the problem. It's easy to riot, it's easy to steal and claim "XYZ caused me to loot." It's hard to organize like-minded people and bring about change. It takes time, grit and determination. Think how much better things would be if the thousands of people who looted and rioted got together and voted for change. They could elect someone who could enact policies to prevent something like this from happening again. That's how our system works, not by destroying your own neighborhood.

People used to join gangs in my hood because that's all they had. They were poor, their parents were on drugs, sometimes even their grandparents were on drugs. There weren't programs for them to get in so you know how that goes, idle minds....

Sadly, it's still that way in many neighborhoods, only nowadays it's children having to care for parents, grandparents and even the middle class is becoming the poor. GOP governors don't want to extend Medicaid benefits and people don't have medical insurance or can't afford medicine. It's buy medicine or pay bills. The economy is horrible but people think because they see on tv the stock market this and that, it's fine. Nope. The stock market doesn't reflect the actual economy. The country is moving backward, not forwards.

I’m only speaking about Minnesota because it’s where I’m from but also, people are surprised because it’s always listed among the best places to live in America. I said the violence is understandable, not acceptable. But I am not them and I can’t imagine having to live with that amount of hopelessness either. And for a long, long time so other means haven’t really accomplished much.

This is true and a very good point. Countless lives have been lost to police violence, many more than the cases that make national news. While protests have happened in past cases, some violent protests even, nothing really changed.

Maybe it's the perfect storm of George Floyd's killing happening during a time when the world is already in turmoil dealing with COVID that triggered a response that gained attention and support internationally, maybe not. Either way this time the response feels different.

I still think meaningful change will be slow but at least I feel some hope there will finally be change.

Hope.

Hope is what makes you get up and look for a better way when you fall down. What makes us get up angry and violent, convinced that we should continue on the same path after we fall down?

What do we call that?

Maybe I'm wrong but I'd still call it hope. Hope that just maybe, somehow someway this time it'll be different. Hope that somebody, everybody will hear and maybe for a change actually listen to what they hear. As long as you keep getting up when you fall down I'd say hope is still there.

I don't believe I have ever met a racist nurse. I have worked with nurse friends who grew up knowing only White people. One young RN I oriented grew up in Chicago, but in school, church and the neighborhood ONLY knew Polish people, immigrants and their descendants. She was as considerate and kind to all of us and her patients as we can hope to be.

I haven't met the nurse this is about.

Las Palmas nurses say hospital retaliated against them over their allegation of racism

Two registered nurses say Las Palmas Medical Center turned their complaints about an alleged racist incident against them. Now, they are demanding the hospital adopt a zero tolerance policy against racism...

In late June, Barroteran and Lopez were at the nurses station at the hospital discussing a news article about the governor of Florida blaming a spike in COVID-19 cases on migrant farmworkers.

A supervising nurse, who is white, overheard the conversation and allegedly told them, “If you hate it here so much, then why don’t you get back in your boat?” The supervisor then told them to go back to Mexico, according to a news release from the National Nurse Union.

Barroteran and Lopez reported the incident to a higher-level supervisor and an investigation took place that "came to nothing," López said, adding the two registered nurses were reprimanded for talking politics at the nurses station.

In response, a news conference was called to demand that Las Palmas implement a policy of zero tolerance against racism...

... "Most of the staff here is Hispanic and (it's) the same case for our patients," Barroteran said. "We just want an environment where it's going to be safe and where we feel that management, HR and the whole hospital is going to support us. We just felt that it didn't happen this time."...

This is the problem that y'all keep overlooking. The people who are starting the violent protests and killing cops are white. But keep blaming it on the people who are black and live in those neighborhoods. Also, AL just said they've been purposefully stifling black history and furthering white history. You keep going on and on about how you're for the uplifting of black people, then post stereotypical things as if it applies to the whole black community. No ma'am, it applies to the people you see, not us all. Please stop speaking as if you know what our plight is and understand it when clearly you do not.

I agree that SOME of the looters and people breaking windows and starting fires are White. In my city some of the looters were NOT. I cannot find a report stating whether or not the suspect has been found and arrested.

July 28, 2020 Minneapolis police say 'Umbrella Man' was a white supremacist trying to incite George Floyd rioting

A masked man who was seen in a viral video smashing the windows of a south Minneapolis auto parts store during the George Floyd protests, earning him the moniker "Umbrella Man," is suspected of ties with a white supremacist group and sought to incite racial tension, police said.

A Minneapolis police arson investigator said the act of vandalism at the AutoZone on E. Lake Street helped spark a chain reaction that led to days of looting and rioting...    ...   Sgt. Erika Christensen wrote in a search warrant affidavit filed in court this week. "Until the actions of the person your affiant has been calling 'Umbrella Man,' the protests had been relatively peaceful. The actions of this person created an atmosphere of hostility and tension. Your affiant believes that this individual's sole aim was to incite violence." Police identified "Umbrella Man" thanks to a tip that came via e-mail last week, Christensen said...

Looters of are all colors. My point were white supremacists have a plan to start the looting and riots knowing it will be blamed on BLM.

Yes. It's a strategy of acceleration.

Agree with this. Seems once it starts the looting is an equal opportunity activity. I've seen news clips clearing showing looters of all colors in all cities where the looting is happening.

Once the looting starts it becomes a crime of opportunity where many people that I am sure in their day to day lives aren't thieves see the stuff they want and can't afford on the other side of that broken display window and see everybody else just helping themselves to it and they join in.  The mob mentality takes over.

What's tricky is finding the trigger that started the looting. In each case there had to somebody or a group of somebodies that were the first to start breaking windows.  In at least one case in Chicago it was obviously planned in advance as looters were arriving on scene with rental vans to haul away the stolen goods.
