you guys are mostly from the USA?
I just glanced over a thread and it seems you guys are ridculously overpaid?
In Australia.. nursing is by far not a well paid job. Its maybe just average. My step dad who was a traffic controller - held a sign that said "slow" and "stop" on the flipside got paid $10 an hour more than me.. i kid you not.
Thats not really what i was saying.. My point was that on the accusation that were are overpaid... we dont become nurses b/c of the salary. . we do way more work sometimes than any amount of money can pay....I agree with you about why people become nurses! i did become a nurse for many reasons..steady job and salary included with patient care and ect.. My mentors all said those things basically to say i should be happy with my work as a nurse for other reasons b/c even though the money is good.it may not always compensate for the hard work.I do love what i do....but it is hard work and i appreciate my paycheck sorry for the misunderstanding ! :)

I could support my family of 4 on my income, but wouldn't want to. We'd be safe if my husband lost his job (who, by the way, brings home more than twice my income.) Most of my income is used to pay off my student loans - the rest goes to savings and retirement.
*sigh* Man, that must be nice. My husband makes less than half of what I make, and just about every bit of what we make goes to basic living expenses and bills. I have practically zero clothing budget (my kids clothes are all bought by my mother in law... well, mostly), and we don't get to take many trips, go to shows or concerts, etc..
Sorry, just needed to vent a bit, sorry. I get so tired of living like this. I'm starting to get better about putting away money/budgeting to pay those bills that aren't affecting our everyday life per se but ARE affecting our future... ie, student loan bills, outstanding medical bills, etc..
Nurses rich. Ha!!!! Whatever. I make pretty good money, yeah. But HEALTH INSURANCE is so dang expensive that it pretty much takes care of all the extra money I'm making.
Let's try to cut through the bull cr_p, shall we?
A plumber does not need a degree to perform HIS trade, and makes much, much more per hour than a nurse.
Electrcians also don't need a degree, same big salary gap...are ya gettin' my drift here? I never heard anyone ask a physician if he heard the calling...is medicine less noble than nursing? Or are we still stuck in that Florence Nightingale legend? Good grief, that was centuries ago, folks.

Rich???? Overpaid??? I have never been rich working this job! When I was in nursing school, we used to talk about quitting nursing school and getting a job pushing a broom at one of the many industries that was in my area because at that time they were paid WAY more than the nurses. Guess what...I am still working and many of the industrial jobs have been shipped overseas and those workers who were used to the big money had to learn to adapt or leave the area for other work. I started out in 1978 @ $5.35/hr. Needless to say I make more than that now, but back then my money went further than it does now.
Although I may not be rich by many standards, I feel very fortunate with my salary. My salary allows me to live the lifestyle of a middle-class American. My parents supported three children on a combined salary of a third of what I make now. We lived under the poverty line, but we were a happy family and I never realized how poor we actually were.
My husband makes more money that I do and we live off his salary alone. All of my salary goes into savings and retirement (and I use some to support my shopping habit). Of course, it would be harder if we only had my income coming in and a family to support.
I'm quite satistifed with my salary now, but I did feel that I was underpaid when I worked in acute care. I felt as though I was working way too hard and had too much responsibilty for the pay. Now, I have a cushy job that involves no patient contact and no life or death situations and I make more money than working in acute care. I can't complain.
rich?...well, let's see.....moved across the country, pay the same amount of money for gas, higher rent, food the same, took almost $10/ hour cut in pay, get nothing for having a bsn, but still have to pay back those student loans, oh yes, i,m rich!! (i am, but not monetarily) i have to say i am a bit discouraged by the low pay. my brother, who doesn't even have a high school diploma (i love him, of course) makes more money an hour than my husband (who has a masters) and i put together. he has to work in the heat and he works hard, but come on!! i love what i do, but it's really hard when young people tell me that they would love to be a nurse, but can't believe the low pay. ok, off my soap box, now. no, i'm not rich, but at least i love my job!!
