Rich nurses?

Published

you guys are mostly from the USA?

I just glanced over a thread and it seems you guys are ridculously overpaid?

In Australia.. nursing is by far not a well paid job. Its maybe just average. My step dad who was a traffic controller - held a sign that said "slow" and "stop" on the flipside got paid $10 an hour more than me.. i kid you not.

*sigh* Man, that must be nice. My husband makes less than half of what I make, and just about every bit of what we make goes to basic living expenses and bills. I have practically zero clothing budget (my kids clothes are all bought by my mother in law... well, mostly), and we don't get to take many trips, go to shows or concerts, etc..

Sorry, just needed to vent a bit, sorry. I get so tired of living like this.

Nurses rich. Ha!!!! Whatever. I make pretty good money, yeah. But HEALTH INSURANCE is so dang expensive that it pretty much takes care of all the extra money I'm making.

Wow, you sound just like me, only my husband earns zippety-doo-dah. Bright side is, I don't have to pay sitters most of the time.

I know what it's like to have nothing to spare for any kind of indulgences or fun things, though, and that sucks. We are getting ready to go to a funeral in a few minutes, and my daughter is having to wear flip flops because her tennis shoes don't go with her dress and I can't afford to even go to Wal-Mart for the special occasion. Then again, we are really grieving over the loss of our friend and neighbor and right now things seem trivial.

Wouldn't you have to convert Australian dollars to American dollars before making an analysis? Before I started doing agency, I made more money not as a nurse, in a doctor's office with flexibility, the ability to urinate when I had the urge, no weekends, holidays and my hands weren't cracked from handwashing so much.

Hey guys I can tell you that you're more than OK with your salary because there're lot more nurses in the world working for smaller salary and ( don't want to offend) maybe they work a lot more than you because the contry which is more poor than USA can have a smaller number of employers so ......?

Also I want to ask all nurses whom want to help me with the information about Crescent Healthcare If anyone knows something about it, of course

Thank you

no we are overworked and underpaid.. i work my bum off and uncle sam takes the bulk of it.. for all the education we must have and the many patients to one nurse .. we are very underpaid..my mom ( who just retired from 50 years of nursing) said it best yesterday at breakfast " nursing is still considered an act of charity, as it was when i was a nurse "..

You're right honey! Tell me where the grossly overpaid nurse are - I want to go there. Who wants to join me? We'll caravan!

Oh, you are soooo funny! I feel the SAME way and I bet a lot of us do.... One Nsg instructor used to tell us what she had to do - like when the dinosaurs roamed the earth - and I'd rather be a nurse now that then!

where???

i am very fortunate. now, i can work part time at a position i love and i cannot believe (most of the time) that i actually get paid to do this job!

i am very blessed. (i never forget this - gratitude attitude!)

i work 24 hour shifts and yes, there are times it is very difficult work - but, compared to er staff nurse, icu staff nurse, travel/contract rn - this work is less money per hour, but i am much "better off".

i guess it depends on your definition of rich!

my husband is now 45 "a stay at home dad to our kids (all four legged variety)" - retired "fully" at 43, semi-retired at 41. he is 100% supportive of my work - shift and "related" activities (i lecture, teach a few classes and do some writing/projects). we have a nice, but not fancy lifestyle. our homes are without mortgages, our vehicles fully paid for - we carry little to no debt and within reason are quite comfortable. (we did not get there via my income - ;))

can nursing provide a "good living" - yes. but, it is relative to the "needs" that must be met with that income.

can nursing make you financially rich? hmmm, depends on what that is to you.

practice safe!

Think I can join? I haven't worked in 17 years because of a permanent diability. But I do hold a valid professional nurses license.

Sure - the more the merrier! I've been out for 5 years and would need to re-activate my license. My doctor told my his office nurse was leaving, then asked me if I'd like the job, but in the next breath he told me that as my doctor he recommends I NEVER return to work - so I am really, really bummed out. I have held on to the delusion (and yes I'm using the correct word) that I could go back and take up where I left off - but not to be! I'd make a heck of a good medical secretary now!

Hey, at least we have retained our sense of humor. I too dream of returning to work, as a nurse. Then I take a walk and all the pain comes rushing back, a long with the reason's for my inability to work. I would even love to pay the taxes I once did. At least I would have a good income to live on. And I could give my grandchildren things I now cannot afford to.

i don't think someone was saying that nurses are rich but in my hospital it is a joke that goes around the rn= rich nurse and lpn= low paid nurse. we all know the facts tha rn's make more an hour than the lpn's so thats how the joke got started around our hospital !

it's a well-known fact all around the country that lpn does stand for low paid nurse.........and let's play nurse......ha! well...we are all rich in spirit to do this work well, eh?;)

Compared to the training, Nursing is one of the best paid profession in US. Of course doctors make more, but they require much longer training.

Go to any community college and find out which associate degree holder can make more money than a Nurse graduate? NONE! For example, an accounting associate graduate makes $10-$20 here, plus they work on an exempt job, means no matter how much OT there is, they are not getting paid for it.

I guess because Union in this country is very powerful. Anybody who are in the union, they get significantly higher pay. For example, the Transit system in NYC, when they were on strike couple years ago for complaint of low pay. it turns out that a cleaner of the floor makes 47K, more than most fresh college graduate.

The healthcare cost in this country highrock every year, why? Many people think high salary in health care worker is the major contribution. Unfortunately that is the true. There is definitely monopoly in this labor market.
