hello all,
well i am starting to feel discourage about me getting into the nursing program. i am a student at broward community college. i am very scared that retaking some of my pre-req will hurt my chance of getting into the rn program. i didnt get any fs just ds and withdraws. its not that i cant understand the info taught to me its just that i was going through some issues with my family, my mom was very sick and i had to work 2 jobs to help with bills. things are looking better for our family, i dont even have to work anymore so school is my top priority. i know i can do this, here is the situation........
class needed to apply for the program
chemistry
anatomy and physiology 1&2 with lab
english1
these are the grades i recieved
chemistry 1st attempt = d
2nd attempt = a
a&p 1 1st attempt= d
2nd attempt= w
i plan to retake this class this fall august 08
a&p 1 lab 1st attempt = d
i also plan to take this class again fall 08
english 1 1st attempt= w
2nd attempt=d
3rd attempt = b
my gpa so far is 2.3 or something like that i know once i take the other classes i will be getting as and bs some my gpa should go up.....if there is anyone who been the bcc or anyone with advice or suggestion i will gladly appreciate it...thanks much

I would first ask if any of the grades can be forgiven because of your personal situation. Some schools allow this. Your school also requires a min gpa of 2.0, so you are above that. Getting classes removed from your transcripts could increase that gpa.
What about all the other things your school requires? BCC requires many things besides the prereqs and gpa, so if you work hard to do well on all those other things, you will definitely increase your chances.
I would also ask the school for the last year's stats. How many applied, how many accepted, what was the gpa cutoff, min exam grade accepted, etc. This will give you a better idea of where you stand and where you need to work.
Good luck.

I dont see how retaking your science classes would hurt your chances of getting into a program. Most schools that I am aware of want A&P to be within the last 5 years of applying and therfore look at the latest attempt made. Although every schools enerty requirment is different. For me I had a C in A&P and retook it for an A. Just be aware of your schools entry requirments and number of attemps allowed and good luck.
what do you think about doing LPN then later on do my RN some say its a waste of time and I should stick it out for the RN program which I will never start until January 2010. Im only 23 but I feel like by the time im dont I will too old...ahhhhh!!!! so many choices

FYI, my school (and Im sure others) only let you receive points for the first attempt... I would check to see what the situation is for the school you are applying to.

I am in Florida, and here in my local area you can have no more than two retakes in a maximum of two classes. Also, in the state of Florida if you receive a C or higher in a course you can not retake it (in a state college). I would go and talk to the nursing advisors at your school and discuss your situation. They may look at the whole picture especially if there were extenuating circumstances during those times.

check with your school first. most community colleges don't care if you retake a class in order to bump up your gpa. make sure you get as or bs in your sciences, a&p, chem, micro. i don't know what your school's requirement is for the nursing program, but ours was 3.5 for the 4 sciences. good luck! keep trying.

Look into academic renewal. Your school may or may not offer it. They require a certain number of credit hours that count towards a "new" GPA and your old GPA is wiped away. Call the registrar and find out if they do this.
Also about doing the LPN- its worth looking into. I know a lot of people go this route and it works for them. It would allow you to work after you get your LPN and then bridge over to your RN. RN bridge programs are generally easier to get into as there tends to be less competition. And you will NOT be too old! Just look at my age! LOL.. and I'm not even in NS yet and there is no way I consider myself too old!

Hang in there, if this is what you truly want to do, YOU CAN DO IT! I often thought so many times during school, that I just could not do it, but I did it, and I am really happy I stuck with it. Rhonda

I would definitely check with your school and it looks like all you need to worry about is redoing A&P. At the school I attended - the nursing program went by the most recent grade and they didn't start limiting the retakes until you failed them at THEIR school. So if you come into it with that much improvement, I think you should be fine. If they say they look at both, I would write a short essay to include with you application how far you have come since the first grades, and show them what you have accomplished since. GOOD LUCK!

Check with your school and see what they say. Most schools want you to have a C or high in pre-reqs in order to be qualified to be considered for entry.
If your school has you write an essay for entry I would definately find a way to talk about yhe life experience of trying to work two jobs, take care of your mother, and go to school.
awww thank you
