hi,
it's my first time to post anything in this site, i usually just lurk and read posts hehehe i'm sori if i've posted in the wrong forum.. but anyways here's my question..
I'm a BSN student from the philippines and i'm in my last yr (4th) hopefully i'll be able to graduate by march of next year (which is wen graduation is stated to be), if i wanted to work as a nurse in canada what requirements would i be needing? i've asked around when i went there last summer because my family just migrated there, my parents sent me back here to the philippines though because they thought it a waste if i weren't to finish my education here seeing as to i only had just one more year left... anyway the people i've asked just kept saying that all i had to do was finish my nursing course here and then go back there when i'm done then challenge the test (i don't really know what test they were referring to but i;m thinking its probably their board exam?) and that would be it... so does that mean that i don't have to take the board exam here in my country anymore all i'll be needing is the diploma? please help i'm really hoping someone would help me on this because i've been looking for information but to no avail and i'm still as confused as ever and thank you in advance

Hi! Chezie86,
Yes you have to finish your BSN degree and after that challenge the Local exam in the philippines and then apply in canada for a separate exam... they have different exam in canada but more or les same as nclex...

The Canadian Exam is very different from NCLEX.

hello!
definitely CRNE is different from NCLEX. I don't know about the requirements in vancouver but what i know is you need to finished your BSN degree and get your credentials evaluated. If you have the chance to take the RN exam in Philippines take it. It will be better for your evaluation with CRNBC (credentialling body).
i have a cousin in Vancouver and she came from the Philippines, they let her take the exam but the same time she is licensed in the Philippines.
i came here in Canada after I graduated and never took the exam because i need to leave Philippines before asap and they did allow me here in Ontario to challenged the exam.
It varies with the province.
so goodluck!
ok wow! thank you so much for the info... i need to leave soon too.. thanks again for replying to my post :thankya:
one last thing.. by anychance does someone know wat provinces require me to take the exam and what dont? or like do you know where i could find info on that? (other than ontario i mean)

hi guys...i have the same question as chezie and also would it really matter if i graduated from a 2semestral bsn school or a trisemestral bsn school? i was just wondering bec they might not let me take the exam in vacouver, maybe bec i came from a trisemestral school and they might even give me a reason that there is not enough lecture time bec its a trisem school.

Evey province will require that you write the Canadian exam, which takes two days to write, and is similar to the exam for licensure that the US used to have prior to the NCLEX exam being initiated.
Next NLE exam will not be until next summer.
Will depend on the actual hours that you have completed in theory and clinicals. Dependent 100% in the program, not the length of the program.
But be aware that there are issues with the shortened programs in the Philippines being accepted now anywhere. They are being thoroughly investigated in the US...............it is impossible to have 55 credits per semester and that is what is happening on some transcripts from the Philippines. Any program that is shorter than normal will be open to intense scrutiny.

In Vancouver,(BC) in order to qualify you need to be an RN in the originating country. Also, since you took your BSN in the Philippines you need to take english test. There is no such thing as challenging the test in BC. You have to pass all the requirement and assesment by the nursing board before they allow you to take the exam. Usually there is no problem with the program from Phils. (I am not sure though with the short cut programs).
Canadian exam is very much different from NCLEX. Took them both so I know. Phils. local board is more like NCLEX. Canadian exam is more focus on psychosocial.

if i am a citizen in canada then do i still need to take an english test and also 1st be a RN in the philipppines and be qualified to take the provincial exam(CNATS)?
Even you are Canadian Citizen if your first language is not english or graduated from a country that is not english speaking you have to take the english test. There is a a way to waive it but it takes a long process. You need to be an RN where you had your program in order to qualify for CRNE in BC.
