Request not to be placed at certain clinical site

Hello,

I was a nursing student at a community college recently. While attending school I also worked at a major hospital. I burned some bridges and now moving on to a different school. A school that uses my former employer for clinical sites.

I'm looking for words to use in my request letter to my clinical coordinator, asking her not to place me at that hospital.

She's gonna wonder why. I'm not willing to divulge that.

Any advice (other than take the risk of asking my classmates to switch)?

Are you banned from the hospital? If not.. Just suck it up and go.

Like I was told very early on, "suck it up buttercup". We take care of everyone. We do what we need to do. Be a professional.

It will depend on the reason for which you left the facility. I know in my area, if a student is on the do not rehire list, they are not welcome for clinicals either.

im looking to get out of a clinical site/instructor because i heard he is the worst and everyone who has him is soooo far behind. It goes by street address and im set to get him and i dont know what to do either

The school makes all the arrangements with the hospital. You're not there as an employee, you're there as a student with your school. Your old boss risks lawsuits against the hospital if he decides to cause any problems. Typically, the arrangement is that as long as you're legally eligible to be a nurse, they have to let you do your clinicals, or else they'll use a different hospital. There's some exceptions, like the post above if you're on a not-rehirable list, but that's not always necessarily set in stone. There's a difference between not being rehirable because you quit without notice, and not being rehirable because you're a threat to patient safety. And at the end of the day, if it was that serious, there's a record of it. You probably didn't make it past the background check for your school and clinicals if that was the case.

Let them know that you used to work there, and leave it at that. If there's a risk of a problem, schools typically have more than one place where clinicals are done. It just might take you reworking your schedule.

The school is not going to let you out of the instructor because you "heard he is the worst one." The school has determined that he is competent to teach clinical, therefore the chips fall where they may. If you get him, you suck it up, go to clinical and do your best.

You may have to open up and be honest about the reasons why you don't feel comfortable returning. Honestly, if you really don't want to go back there, let them know that you are uncomfortable returning to the same place where you used to work. No harm in asking. The worst they can say is no.

At the end of the day, you have to make nursing school work for you. I would talk to someone about getting another placement.

Let this be a lesson to all: act like a mature professional at all times! You had no options at my school, you showed up where and when they told you to! Switching with another student would be a major no no.

Why are you assuming that the OP didn't act like a mature adult? I had a situation with a previous employer where a Nurse MGR stole an item from me, and it became a big deal with the hospital. She then tried to turn it on me that I originally stole from the hospital. It was a huge mess and I certainly wouldn't have wanted to risk being on that unit for clincal. In the end the hospital took no action and she still is working there as she had friends in high places..

All worked out. If you’re a student going through a similar situation you can message me.

I can't send you a pm because of the 15 messages rule, is it OK to email me directly?

We have had hospitals refuse clinical placements to specific students. We now have a requirement that students must be able to attend all hospitals on our clinical placement list. If not, they must resolve the problem themselves before clinical placement occurs.
