Rent, car, school... how did you pay/manage?

Published

hi guys, have i mentioned how thankful i am to have found this place? It has brought my moral way up and now i have confidence about my future. thank you. Anyways, i just wanted to ask those that have finished nursing school and are nurses about the cost of going to school and living expenses. This is my situation. I'm 24 years old and currently live with my mother. I'm very greateful for that. But the situation is that me and my mother don't have a "mother/daughter" relationship because she didn't raise me, my aunt did. I moved from another country to live with her and i've been living with my mother for the past 7 years. It's been up and down. For the past several years, i've felt uncomfortable living with her. I just feel like i've failed so many times in my life that she's just looking at me "what are u doing?, what's next? move out? be a grown up? do something? I've let my weight get in the way and i've just isolated myself. The more i isolated myself, the more i ate, the more i felt ashamed to go out and be "somebody." i was lost at school, didn't know what i wanted, etc... So this is the image she has of me. This is the image i had of me till recently. Now, i'm determined to lose weight, and take control of my life. I have decided that nursing is what i want to do. I'm feeling positive and i'm working hard on healing myself and the image i have of myself. The problem is my mother still sees me as the person she saw for many years. It brings me down so much. I hate feeling like i'm a failure. She's tapping her feet, waiting for me to make a move. At first i thought, since i'll be going to nursing school, i'll just stay at her house (low expense) and just try to get out of her way for the next two or so years. NOW, i swear i feel much better when i sit at the park and leave the house. I Feel myself.

SO, (sorry for the rant, just wanted to let it out...) my question is this... HOW did you guys do it all? (rent, school expense, etc...) I mean did you have an overnight job while you were going to school during the day? IF your single/supporting yourself, what did you do? I would love to move out but i have no money at all... please advice me. thank you very much. P.s (i'm single no husband/boyfriend support money wise)

if you absolutely cant bear staying with your mom, then leave..first find a job, and find a apt or studio that you can handle paying on your own! you should be able to get financial aid, as long as your not in any defaults on previous loans!! you have to check out differnt programs..find a program that is going to work right for your schedule. for instance i have a family to support, therefore i cant leave my day job. i enrolled in a evening/weekend program. .BUT you dont have these issues.. you just need a job, a small place to crash, and hit those books. please dont let your moms feeling about you dissuade you. this is your LIFE..if this is what you want, DO IT! you will find a wealth of support here, and make positive supportive frienships in school as well. keep your chin up dear, if you need some motivation pm me! good luck and keep us posted!

Stay with your mom. I am old...lol..and I am back at my mom's house. Its a short period of time and it will be well worth it when you can move out and stay out! Apply for all the scholoarships and grants and loans you possibly can and also find a part time job for spending money.

ANYONE can get a federally funded stafford loan. It has nothing to do with which school you go to.
Not all schools participate in the federal student loan program. In order for a student to obtain a federal Stafford loan, the school of attendance must be on the U.S. Department of Education's list. Not all schools are on this list.

Hey you guys....If you really want to lose weight, then go to: http://skinnyme.myfreeforum.org/

It's all about the HCG diet. On this diet, women usually lose about .5 lb PER DAY, while men tend to lose about 1 lb per day. It is a healthy plan, but you will need to read the documentation and research that the Dr that put this together, has published.

This plan has worked for me, in so many ways. I have almost lost every bit of weight I ha don me

I have to tell you, that simply putting one foot in front of the other is what it takes to accomplish or achieve. You don't have to be something special to achieve....You have to take those steps to achieve amazing things, further proving to yourself that you were special, all along.

Go check out the information and see what you think!

And please remember that we are all in this game of life, together.

So proud of you. I wish I was your mom and you were my daughter.

thank you guys so much for all the love and advice. I'm grateful for the support. i'm glad i have a place to come to for support. My mother's situation stresses me out and as several of you have stated, i'm just going to do what's best for me and just be poor for a while and live in a shack if it means focus for my future. anyways, i've read through the replies and what i got was for me to get loans and/or work part time. I just want to mention that when i went to college to get my first degree i got grants and loans, so i do have loans already. I have around 15,000 of loans for undergrad. Now, i'm planning to go back to school full time to take my pre-reqs so i won't have to pay back my loans till i finish school. My question is do i still get federal funded grants/loan the second time around? I'm thinking of paying for my pre-reqs while working and for the nursing school to get some help if possible. Has anyone been in this situation where you borrowed money if this is your second degree? Will it be too much loans and i'll drawn? thanks guys

My friend earned a BS degree from a private, expensive university nearly ten years ago and amassed $48,000 in student loans. After a few years of working at a low-paying case management job, she returned to school for nursing. She paid cash to attend an LPN program at a community college, and then obtained a private student loan from Chase to finance the tuition for her RN program.

I went to nursing school (BSN program) while pregnant/with a newborn and an unemployed husband. I also lost 80lbs in 6 months right before I got pregnant.

My situation wasn't exactly the same, because we "lived" with my grandma. However, we did pay her $250/month rent.

Anyway, only certain aspects of how I survived nursing school making $10,000 a year will help you. You are by yourself, you don't need a big place, so find the absolute cheapest place you can find that you feel safe in. When I was single I rented a furnished efficiency for $225/month in a nice neighborhood. Maybe you can find roommates, but they have to be people you can count on. Try to find something utilities included.

Buy groceries on sale. You may not get the healthiest goumet meals, but a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread, a pack of turkey, a bag of apples, and 7 "Smart Ones" (or similar brand) on sale should only set you back $25/week where I live. Ramen noodles are even cheaper.

Get loans. I am $35,000 in debt, but can easily afford the payments.

Get a job. This was harder for me with a baby, but I managed to work all sorts of jobs in college. My last year I got a job at a hospital, which helped tremendously in securing a job post-graduation.

Ask students ahead of you in the program how much you really need books the course requires. Something that just requires a few pages can be copied from someone else, or share the cost. Look on-line for the best deals.

Best of luck. My mom and I don't mesh well together either, so I know where you are coming from. Ideally it would be nice to suck it up and stay there, but your mental health is also important. Right now when you are single, without time commitments to a boyfriend or kids, is the time to make the plunge. Get a job now (if you don't already have one) and start saving, saving, saving until you can afford to move. Save, save, save some more and you will probably be greatly prepared for Fall 2011, and if you save real well Spring 2011. I would not attempt to make so many changes so soon and go in Fall 2010.

also, if you go to Roommates, roommate finder and roommate search service you can find a rent share situation, which may prove to be a lot less expensive!

I went to school via student loans. My parents paid for my books, but that was about it. On school vacations, I worked my butt off. As a second and third year nursing student, we had the opportunity to work in the hospital the school was affiliated with. The $ was ok, and we were able to do procedures if the nursing staff was willing to teach us. It was all a part of the hospital based program. Everyone jumped on those shifts for the experience as well as the $!

Is your first degree a Bachelors? If so, you can still get loans but not grants. Which I think is incredibly stupid considering one can get all the associate's degrees a school offers and get Pell grants all along. But that's another story...

crazierthanthou - REALLY? i NEVER knew that..that sucks (LOL)...

to the OP, yes you can still financial aid - loans. i have a previous BA, i do not get Pell or Tap, but i do get the loans..theres like an aggregate amount of loans you have can for a BA level. I thinks its a total of $46,000, but your way under that! so dont worry too much about that..you can always call the Dept of Education to find out how much your still eligible for..
