- was training another nurse on vents and she asked me how long have I worked on them. "I said "for years" without thinking. Ive only been working with vents for 6 years. The trainee is now mad at me. I shouldn't have boasted myself like that. What can I say to her?

6 years or 6 months? Sounds to me from your post that you didn't tell her an untruth. I would brush it off. Why would she be made at you? Just tell her you didn't want to come across as boasting, it just might have come out that way.

Six years *is* "for years!"
And boasting, really? It wasn't like you weren't answering a question. It would be one thing if you had said, "look, I've been doing this FOR YEARS and blah blah blah" but you were prompted.
People need to chill out a bit.

The trainee is mad at you? Sounds like she needs to chill out and grow up a bit. If you have 6 years experience and she has none, you have LOTS more experience and she should be happy to be learning from you.

I don't understand the problem....6 years does equal "for years." Telling the truth does not equal boasting, unless the truth is told in a boastful, gloating manner.
Why is the trainee mad? And does it really matter since you only told the truth?

6 years is a long time in my opinion, how long do you have to be working with vents for it to constitute 'years'
Why is the trainee mad? What is their problem with what you said?

Only 6 years? Well, you're not qualified at all. Just kiddin', you can be my trainer anytime. As for the mad hatter, let her be mad - her loss.

well isn't 6 years um... YEARS?? What's the beef? Why not boast, gracefully. Boast away.
I have a feeling the poster meant to type MONTHS. Just my thoughts, otherwise that's an idiotic statement, pretty obvious to all.

How do you know she's mad?
If she's giving you the stink eye, are you sure that's why? That's a pretty innocuous thing to get mad at someone over, IMHO. The fact that you're even concerned about it tells me you aren't the boastful sort.
If I were you I'd ask her exactly what's troubling her.
I do mean 6 years. The thing is I just started with this company about 9 months ago and she has been with them for 18 years but only did trach patients.

As far as experience goes in the nursing world, 6 years is a lot of experience! Even though you have only been with that group 9 months you still own all your experience. Why should she be mad at you? Hold your head high and ignore her.

Maybe when you said "for years" she thought you said "four years" and now she's mad because you hid two years experience from her. :) Either that, or she just needs to get the stick out of her butt and get over herself.
