Advertisement I just saw that made me mad!

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

I just saw an advertisement at the top of one of the All Nurses pages that really upset me. It was an ad for the University of Pheonix I think. It said: If your life was on the line, wouldn't you want a BSN prepared nurse caring for you?

ARRGH! First of all, let's not be deceived. I am an RN with an associates degree with 20+ years of experience. Would you want me or a brand new grad BSN caring for you? I think I would take the experience over the degree, but, Ok, maybe some people wouldn't.

My next thought was: this ad is from The University of Pheonix. It's mostly an online college, right? There is nothing wrong with that, but, I am continually taking classes via YouTube from reputable colleges and I do read the materials and some of the homework even though I can't turn it in or get any credits for it. It's just for my personal betterment and to learn as much as possible about the field I am in. If I could get credits for the classes I would have my BSN by now. Why is it better to be a BSN from an online college than an ADN from an in-person college?

I understand that All Nurses has to pay for the site somehow since it is free to join, so the ads are needed. I was just somewhat offended and needed to rant.

It's not that serious.

"Why is it better to be a BSN from an online college than an ADN from an in-person college?" I don't think they're saying it's better. It's all for money. They want people to read the ad and be interested in their BSN program and potentially enroll in it. It's how they make money.

Honestly, I went to a hospital affiliated diploma program and in our clinical rotations we always ran into other students from BSN schools and while they may have been more book learned, when it came to actual patient care and critical thinking, we blew them out of the water probably because we spent twice as much time doing as they did. Moral of the story...you can read all the right books and ace all the hard tests but if you've never seen blood or dealt with poop or had to react in a critical situation...all that fancy "larnin'" will still have you standing all deer in the headlights while the more competent nurses and nursing students take care of business! As an RN, when we get students on our unit, we MUCH prefer the diploma school kids who live and breathe clinical nursing for two and a half years to the BSN hopefuls that don't know which end of the patient is up until their final semester!

The U of Phoenix ad on my allnurses page just says "earn an RN to BSN or MSN from a leader in nursing education".

If my page were showing the same ad as yours, I'd be irked too, even though I am a BSN nurse. I would most definitely prefer the RN with 20+ years of experience to a new grad, regardless of degree.

and here we go again with another bashing of BSN nurses/nursing programs....

Am a Diploma RN, Charity Hospital of New Orleans. If you didn't see it or learn it, it didn't exist. We completed over 2000 hours of clinical work. Beat that! I was rejected from a BSN program before attending Charity. Best thing that ever happened to me.

Woops, you're absolutely right! I had some cruddy run ins with BSN students that has probably tainted my view. I'm sure there are excellent BSN students out there....the ones I base my opinion on were condescending and acted like we were a lower class of nurse (until the afore mentioned deer in headlights scenario).

PureLifeRN I don't see this as bashing BSN students! I see it as standing up for Associate degree or diploma nurses.

ADN nurses pass the same NCLEX! We are all RNs! We would all want the experienced RN taking care of us and where he/she went to school is just so trivial.

A Bachelor's is a wonderful thing. I think it can make a person more well rounded as an individual. But it certainly cannnot make a person a better nurse!

An open mind, studying hard in nursing school, getting through nursing school, passing the NCLEX-RN, and then years of experience in the field makes for a better nurse.

I find that ad offensive also. And yes advertisers will offend, flatter, lie, and misrepresent in order to sell their product.

I had the same experience in LVN school which I had the fortune of doing most of my clinicals in an acute facility. The charge nurses loved when we were on the floor because the patients ADl's got ALL taken care of as well as any specific needs the patient may have had. We weren't just there to hand out meds and change dressings

Lest this turn into the 1,001st thread about ADN-vs.-BSN nurses, let me explain that Allnurses.com has no creative control over the content of the ads. The whole BSN=better nursing care thing twerks me off, too, but that's not the issue here; what I'm hearing is that particular ad is offending some of the membership, and we do take that seriously. We just can't do much about it......sorry! :[anb]:

How about the number of ads that feature a female nurse vs male. Understandably we are upset by those we identify with, but revenue is what drives the engine. I don't think they are driven by intent or thought as much as income, which isn't always a bad thing. the site has bills to pay like everyone, so all we can do is try to recognize our own biais. We see issues in advertisements for a bsn vs rn, but not female vs male nurses, its natural...so toast me, just my thoughts

Ok good thing to know about the ads because I always seem to see the Trojan condom ads whenever I login.
