Advertisement I just saw that made me mad!

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

I just saw an advertisement at the top of one of the All Nurses pages that really upset me. It was an ad for the University of Pheonix I think. It said: If your life was on the line, wouldn't you want a BSN prepared nurse caring for you?

ARRGH! First of all, let's not be deceived. I am an RN with an associates degree with 20+ years of experience. Would you want me or a brand new grad BSN caring for you? I think I would take the experience over the degree, but, Ok, maybe some people wouldn't.

My next thought was: this ad is from The University of Pheonix. It's mostly an online college, right? There is nothing wrong with that, but, I am continually taking classes via YouTube from reputable colleges and I do read the materials and some of the homework even though I can't turn it in or get any credits for it. It's just for my personal betterment and to learn as much as possible about the field I am in. If I could get credits for the classes I would have my BSN by now. Why is it better to be a BSN from an online college than an ADN from an in-person college?

I understand that All Nurses has to pay for the site somehow since it is free to join, so the ads are needed. I was just somewhat offended and needed to rant.

I would take the experienced nurse any day!

Ok good thing to know about the ads because I always seem to see the Trojan condom ads whenever I login.

We partner with Google for some of our advertising, which we don't have creative control. Many times, the content of the ads may not be nursing related, but may be related to the user viewing the ads.

We do have several direct advertisers which we would have some creative control over, however, the ad you mention is not one of them. Sorry you found the ad offensive, you may want to voice your dislike of the ads message with the advertiser directly.

As already mentioned, there is an option upgrade to a platinum membership (compare memberships), you will not see any ads within the forums as well as many other perks.

This is not a bashing of BSN nurses/BSN programs as a previous poster mentioned. What many are saying here is that Associate Degree/Diploma nurses are frequently looked down upon. Its nothing wrong with being a BSN nurse, as I am a pre-nursing student and I aspire to be a BSN nurse primarily because I want to go about owning a for-profit nursing home, which is besides the point. The point i am trying to make is that you do get a bashing of ADN/Diploma nurses and nursing programs, but what many people fail to realize and what i know, as nurses run throughout my family, is that BSN nurses USUALLY not always, lack the amount of clinical skills that you will get in a 2yr/diploma program RN program. BSN programs put more emphasis on management in comparison to beside, where the 2yr/Diploma nurse is ahead of the game per say. Like the OP said who you would want taking care of you, a BSN nurse with no experience but higher education, or a 2yr/diploma nurse taking care of you with many years of experience, but withouth the higher education. I think i would personally take the diploma/ADN nurse to be my provider. My aunt say when her hospital hired a mass of new grads, both BSN and ADN, the Associate degree nurses were quicker to catch on and appeared more confident and didnt need as much supervision as the BSN nurses did.

Of course, because we all know that the best students only go to community colleges and get ADNs instead of BSNs.

And how, exactly, is this NOT bashing BSN nurses???

Get a BSN, stop bashing BSN nurses.

This issue wont be a problem if there was only one way to become an RN instead of 5000 ways.

I dont see doctors getting an associate degree... in medicine.

I feel the exact opposite! I feel that, on this site, BSN nurses are looked down upon and are made out to be not as smart or quick to catch on and that we are somehow clinically inferior to ASN nurses, which is not true. Our BSN grads are just as lost as the ASN grads, actually I have found that the BSN grads have better time managment.

To clarify I am an RN-BSN and have been looked down upon by ADNs. And please yall stop with the anecdotes of BSN nurses been book prepared and not able to hit the floor running. How come there are no quotes/research of how the two groups compare 1 yr or 2yrs after graduation? Is the ADN/diploma RN still ahead of the curve? I ll keep my anecdote to myself.

To the ad issue, It could have been worded much better but remember they have a product and would word their ads to bring in revenue i.e students.

Its not to say that BSN nurses are only book prepared, its just that associate degree nurses tend to have more clinical experience. One who catches on less quick than the other doesnt validates one as being a better nurse. BSN nurses shouldnt be looked down upon on this site, as essential they are both nurses, one that is generally more knowledgeable in bedside, and the other with management.

According to who?!?! I have seen a lot of BSN new grads and they "catch on" just as quick as ASN. And I have seen ASN new grads completly drown on the floor while the BSN new grads flourished and thrived. But your post is exactly the prevailing attitude of ASN nurses here on this site. I have seen posts like this over and over again, and it gets really old. Do you really think that getting an ASN makes you a better bedside nurse over a BSN?!? honestly....

I'm out.
