RECIPROCITY to California - RN Graduate from the PHILIPPINES

Published

Hello all,

I am a BSN graduate from the Philippines, and an RN there and in New York.

I'm sure you guys know that international BSN graduates has not been getting through the California BRN since year 2010, because of the issue that foreign graduates (esp. from the Philippines) lack units during our college / Nursing years. This said, I know zero of my colleagues who applied to take the NCLEX got their ATT, since o'10.

I recently applied to have my license in New York endorsed to California, and noted that one requirement they had is that I must provide my college transcripts from where I graduated (again, in the Philippines).

I am currently in CA, but I am thinking to just move to New York, if I am only waiting for my application to get rejected because I lack units, or cases/caseloads.

I'm looking for someone with the same case I am in, or who was in the same case.. Please help me, should I just go to New York? :( :( :(

I do not have my CA RN license as of yet. I still need to attend the MS and OB theory/clinicals. Hopefully after that, I can get my license in CA as an RN. I was just concerned about chelle719, BSN, RN problem regarding her cases because if she can't provide the copies of that, CA BRN will not be able to determine what deficiencies she has to comply.

in what school are in in right now to complete your defeciency?

Hi everyone,

I also graduated year 2009 from the Phil and have the same prob with regards to concurrency issues. After a year of waiting for my RN application here in CA, i got a mail that says i wasn't able to sit for NCLEX-RN. What i did to keep me going was applied for LVN and passed the exam.

Right now, i work in a Skilled Nursng Facility with good pay . Few months after passing LVN, i decided to take RN exam for the state of Florida and got my license few months ago. I waited for few months before i decided to apply for reciprocity because of what i have read in this forum. Now my papers are still in process. Whether it is approved or not, i'm still hoping and praying that they will grant it.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Hi any success with your license reciprocity in cali?

To dheaBSNRN, just so we're all clear, you had no problems with getting the endorsement from TX to CA as your application has now been processed in CA and received the CA license after completing your deficiencies within the CA BRN approved list (via finding an approved CA school) and you were able to submit your 2011 copies of your cases?

As we all know if you miss one step in the process, the license will not be issued via the endorsement method.

I am really confused about this foreign nurse license thing here in California. My understanding from reading from this forum is that if you recently immigrated here and was a foreign educated nurse from the Philippines the chance of getting an ATT to sit for the Nclex was nil due to concurrency/deficiency issues. My spouse's friend's cousin recently (Oct 2014) immigrated from the Philippines. He was a nurse there and somehow he was able to sit for the Nclex in December and now is a licensed RN. I didn't believe it at first but I looked up his name at CABON and sure enough he is an RN (good for him). For what it's worth, they said they went to Sacramento for his application.

When did he graduate BSN in the Phils? 2012 below i think were the ones affected by the concurrency....

so frustrating to think i've wasted my time and money on endorsing my license in illinois here in california.. and working in illinois is not an option coz my husband is working here in cali and got a child visitation as well.. i'm thinking of taking the LVN route instead, i'm just hoping i won't be turned down this time..

Have you tried calling accredited schools to take these courses? I'm currently taking some classes at MJC, hoping to get a chance of getting those 2 courses for fall/spring.

Hi were u able to have your rn license endorsed to cali?

Hi. I passed NCLEX RN CA last 2008 and had it endorsed to vermont after 3 yrs to have an active license while still in the Phils. Now Im in CA and have my ssn already. Is my pass letter in CA still valid or I should apply for endorsement? Thank you

Hi isyelmui100. May i know what happened in your application? We have the same case. Thank you

Hi..I need information where to complete MS & Ob deficiencies?

PLEASE!!HELP ME! Find a school..

I tried almost every school on the list! Even went to Loma Linda , they did not even want me to include on their waiting list because they said it is not been moving for 2 years.

It seems impossible to find one?!! Others still on waiting list..

If anyone knows please email me [email protected]

Are we allowed to complete it in the Philippines?

What are the requirements they need in order for them see that the deficiencies have been completed? Hours of clinical and lectures?

I think that it is seem not right to be deemed deficient while nursing students here in California don't handle as much cases and actual patients than nursing students who graduated in the Philippines.

Welcome to the site

If you take any courses outside of CA I would suggest contacting the BRN and check that they will be approved

Search the threads, if i remember correctly one poster did post the name of a couple of schools willing to take foreign educated nurses like you.

The CA BON has determined your educational deficiency regardless of how many cases or actual patients you have handled. But correct me if I am wrong your average student to patient ratio is 15:1 or 15 students to 1 patient correct. Quite the opposite in the U.S.

You should get the written approval if you're allowed to re-take the deficient courses back in the Phils. Some have reported they were allowed to do so, but never came to state they got the ATT.

With regards to the cases issue, the difference is that as another poster mentioned earlier, in the Phils, we do handle more but it's not the more quality time spent as they do in CA (or the states), that of being one on one, attached at the hips of an experienced nurse (preceptor) and that nurse must be qualified by the CA BRN, versus in the Phils, our "experienced" nurse may just be a new fellow nurse and it's the blind following the blind.

While we may handle more cases in the Phils, it's not of the same type that a US nurse student goes thru and expected to answer and document the more difficult analytical questions thru out the clinical cases. In the Phils, it's more just of practical routine questions.

From what my US nursing friends have said, it's great that we get to do actual baby deliveries and cord cuts and dressing, but that's why it doesn't matter that CA or other states don't do that. It's NOT a course or clinical requirement as in the Phils.

I mean, where else can a hospital get free medical help or free assistance (by using the PH nurse students) for baby deliveries? That's why talks of abolishing of the deliveries cases in the Phils will not happen, one of the main issue of the "concurrency" issues.

CHED, PRC and PNA together have too much to lose by doing away with the baby cases and the hospitals will lose all their unpaid assistants, should the CHED follow the State's of no need to do baby deliveries.

That being said, even with the more numerous cases handled in the Phils, it does not help out with the more higher NCLEX-RN first-time passing rate of US educated nurses (over 85%) versus the lower 30% first-time passing rate of the international takers (with most likely coming from the Phils).
