Rate My Professor

Published

Since I am almost done with my prerequisites, I wanted to share something that I thought was fun and interesting. If you are signing up for a course, or done with a course, you can put your two cents here and rate your professor. You can see what other students have written about the professor before you take the class.

Of course we all know that some professors you just can't get away from. I thought this was an interesting site regardless.

:wink2:

Let me know what you all think....

The reason that I thought it would be a great idea for nursing students, it because alot of times the nursing instructor staff isn't on there.

At my school, I am obviously not affiliated with every professor there, but the AP professor that has a high failure rate (he even brags about how students rarely get an A in his class)...has a low rate on the site...my psycho chemistry professor is on there too...ironically, it was posted about a year ago that he made a student cry in class and I was thinking..."Ok, that is probably an exaggeration"...until it actually happened in MY OWN class...I swear, he was even nastier to the studnet when she came back.

I mean, you can't take any SINGLE post to heart...but if you see that tons of students have posted, then you can pretty much take it to the bank...I am taking micro this Fall from a professor that has very high ratings on the site for my school.

There is a high school equivalent called ratemyteacher.com

My dh is a high school teacher, and his impression is that the reviews of teachers at his school is right on. Like others have said, one review means nothing. But a trend of reviews....in his experience it has been extremely accurate. His comment is that most kids want to learn, be challenged, and respected. They can tell which teachers want to teach, to challenge, and who respect kids and which ones don't. I'm assuming this crosses over onto ratemyprofessor.com, too.

Though I must admit.....when I found out our college roommate, who was a terrible student to have (a big know it all, EXTREMELY smart, always challenging the teachers, etc) had become a professor of pharmacy (he runs a research lab, but they required all the professors to actually teach a bit, too), both dh and I went onto the site and rated him.....

That site isn't really that great. That site has been up since like the early 2000's. It had a different layout then this site, but its the same addy. I use to use it when I was taking courses to see which teacher to take but honestly it doesn't to the teachers justice. If you failed a course because you didn't do what you were supposed to its easy to rant on that website.

Personally I would NOT put my choosing of a course from a website. Go to the school talk to the actual students, see if you can go to the instructor and talk to the instructor of whats required and how they grade and how the tests are. THEN you will find out how your instructors teaching style will apply to your style.

Also, try to see if the school will allow you to browse the comments that are left after a course. You don't fill out the teacher evaluations just for nothing. I have been able to view these at my school. See if you can do the same thing, you'll never know until you ask.

For those of you who want more information on these websites:

And for some of us in nursing programs, it doesn't really matter how someone is rated...we get who we get and that's it....there is a team of instructors who teaches for each specific semester/topic. There is usually one of these who is assigned to you in clinicals, but for classroom teaching, there is no choice.

So far I've found ratemyprofessor to be very helpful. I agree.. those professors who are slammed by students are pretty easy to pick out as grudges.

I know that I didn't have a clue as to who to take for Chem... so I went on the website.... reviewed the 3 choices I had and decided to go with the one teacher that had all positive remarks as opposed to the other 2 whose remarks were ALL negative... (which I take to heart when all remarks from different students are negative)

After I made my decision, I asked around and the people in my current classes agreed with the choice I made...

I'm a returning student. I'm 33 years old and I don't know a lot of students at my school. If I were to talk with the admin they would state, "ooohhh all of our professors are great... that's why they are here..." I like rmp because so far it's been right on...(with the obvious exception here and there).... and it has saved me from a horrible Chem professor....

I was wondering how many people have used this site. I am already signed up for a few classes to start my pre req's and I looked up my teachers on this site - now I am a little nervous!

I have used the site. I take the ratings very casually though because sometimes a student got a bad grade so they are slamming the teacher. But I definately read the reviews before choosing a teach.

I read the reviews before the semester began and am so glad I did! My science profs were very highly rated and loved by their students, and I can definitely see why!

Good Luck - I'm nervous because my science teacher is rated as the exact opposite!

Don't worry -- my summer one was too, and he was actually very fair in my opinion. I really liked him. It's all subjective!

I read that website. But I don't take serious every comment.

I took math class with professor who doesn't have great opinion there. He have some good comments but most of them are not friendly. I was really surprised! Maybe he was slow and he did some mistakes but overall I think even LAZY student who doesn't like study could get good grade!

I am trying to not take classes with professors with only bad comments ( yes! you can find them there too).

But if there are good rates I am not afraid too much.

In my opinion some people want A's without any work and dedication. And on that website they can vent a little bit

I use it. I look up ratings for my professors before signing up for their classes, and I also rate each instructor at the end of every term. Like others have said, though, I won't let a few bad ratings keep me from taking someone's class. It IS all subjective. Now, if an instructor has 5 pages of nothing but negative reviews, I probably won't take their class. It just depends on what is said about them.

What kind of negative reviews are your instructors getting?
