Hey all! Just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying for the RN new grad program at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego for the Summer 2019 cohort so we can update each other about what's going on! Good luck to everyone!

You have any tips for the interview or things to prepare for?

Which unit are you going to interview with?

I'd say focus on behavioral questions. Like "tell me a time when...". Have a few patient care situations in mind that you can tell stories about (difficult patient etc.). Show enthusiasm. But mainly, be yourself. They've done so many interviews and can really tell the genuine candidates from the ones who aren't.

Just got called for a second interview with surgical ?

@newgradhopeful me too!!!! When is yours? I hope we find out soon after the wait is killing me

Hi all - I submitted my application on March 4, received an offer to interview with a request for my top three interview time slot choices on April 9, and interviewed for the ED on April 19. They didn’t tell me a time period that they would contact me and it being over a week now is killing me!

I had a panel of 10 people (HR person, floor nruses, preceptors, education leads, night charge, etc.) interview me for the ED and they double booked another person with the same time slot as me but apparently they made a mistake and took me in to interview.

Some of the questions I got were:
- Introduce yourself and tell us why you?
- Why nursing? Why ED and why peds? Why Rady’s?
- What do you have to offer that other candidates do not?
- What was the biggest adjustment for you in becoming a nurse?
- How would you handle a coworker that regularly voiced a lack of confidence in your skills?
- How would you handle a dissatisfied family?
- Describe a time that you went above and beyond for a patient?
- How to handle a prescribed med that I didn’t feel comfortable with?
- Prioritize: new admit with difficulty breathing, routine blood sugar, discharge
- Have you worked with children before? Describe that experience to us.
- There were a few more questions before they described the department in detail along with the program (straight nights for two years, 16 week program, etc.) to me and asked me if I had any questions for them.

I’m worried since a previous person posted that they received a same day request for references and I didn’t. I have the office phone and email of the New Graduate Recruiter for the hospital but I’m afraid to contact them honestly... did anybody else apply ED and not hear back yet? I’m hoping that it’s just because my references were already included in the copy of my portfolio that I left behind.

Hello! I have zero connections to the hospitals that I have received interviews for (I'm not even from the area) - So it is doable! I have my BSN, passed NCLEX, ED preceptorship, BLS/ACLS/PALS/CPI/NIHSS/Safety Management and Response Techniques, 7 years of experience working with children, and many volunteer experiences (nursing and non-nursing) including a medical mission abroad (one of my best talking points). I revised my cover letter and resume with SO MANY times that I couldn't even keep track, I started during my last semester in nursing school because I knew it would be a work in progress. Always tailored them to the specific hospital and unit and I really made myself stand out in my cover letter and made sure to highlight my diverse experiences. I prepped for all of my interviews and made sure I had my stories lined up, such as "Tell me a time when... ". The interview was with a 10 person panel, and I made it a point to show my enthusiasm, excitement, and gratitude for being there. Honestly, I was myself.. and it's all about being a good fit with the team they have and if you're not that's okay. You will find your place, promise.

Thank you for this posting! This was really helpful! Congrats and best of luck in the job! I hope to be your coworker soon!

@oceanhugger I would definitely contact the senior nurse recruiter. She was in charge of sending those! HR would be able to connect you to her if you can't get through directly.

Has anyone got an offer from surgical?!

Just had the second interview with them today. Did you?!

No but I interviewed today too and am dying to know! I'm not sure when they will reach out with their decision and never asked.
