"You take the BUS to work!"

Ok. I take public transportation to work. No biggy. I have a co-worker of mine who likes to tell the staff that i don't drive and take the light rail/bus. Its not a big issue but I find his manner sort of rude and intrusive.

Any suggestions?

I would ask them what concern it was of theirs. My mother drives me to work (occasionally I take public transportation...known as the "T" in my neck of the woods, but due to working 3-11, i prefer not to take the bus late at night) because I don't have a car. I never wanted to drive when I first could, and now I'm living with mom, saving up for a car & paying off my loans from NS. It's what works for me....but so many people have felt the need to throw in their two cents and say "You should just get a car, so your mom doesn't have to drive you all the time." or "Your mom/brother is so nice to drive you." I simply tell them that I don't have a car right now & this is what works for my family.

And then I laugh when they all have to heat up and dig their cars out from snow, and my brother rolls in with his four wheel drive to pick me up....

I would be tempted to keep up this arrangement! Hate to drive in ice and snow!

I catch similar flack at my current job (not nursing related) for riding my bike to work, in pretty much any weather. Most of them commute in big trucks or SUV's, are really out of shape, and complained non stop about gas prices before things settled back down. Not sure why some people concern themselves with thing that have no effect on them.

Oh I know how you feel !! I ride my bike to work, takes about 25 minutes and I ride no matter the weather (or used to anyway) and it got so tiresome having people comment about it. Lots of people ride to work here ... the climate allows for it year round (most of the time). I let it stop me and I kick myself because now it is hard to get started on it again. I too found it intrusive.

I agree with other posters, ask him why he finds it so necessary to comment on it. Or maybe you should turn the tables and comment constantly on his method of getting to work.

I hate driving, I love carpooling. Maybe he has an issue with the ideology of POOR people riding the bus and SUCCESSFUL peolpe driving :thnkg:? I usto run to work and back, great exercise. Heck, the guy may LIKE you and he may still be stuck in that middle school attitude where boys make fun of girls they like . Assuming your a girl :)...good luck :)

That would make you 'cool' where i live :) i think free bus passes are a perk of ALL the hospital workers

It IS rude. If I were you, I'd ask him point blank, "I'm sorry, (insert name here), I'm confused as to what is such a big deal about me taking the rail/bus? Would you mind clearing it up for me?" He'll probably keep his mouth closed after that.

He's probably jealous...must have shelled out a lot of money recently for repair work on his car. I had one job that was on the next block. I actually got rid of my car because I didn't see the need to have two cars at home if I could walk to work every day.

Next time he brings it up, "I know it's fascinating, but public transportation wasn't invented for no one to utilize it"

I wish I could take the bus! The buses don't run late enough for me to take one home. I carpool, ride my bike, and drive. Some of my coworkers think riding my bike is a big deal, but there are a lot of bicycle commuters at my hospital.

I wish I could take a train or bus. Sadly Michigan has one of the poorest public transportation systems. I would love to be able to take a bus or train. It would beat having a 400 dollar car payment. Tell your co-worker to mind his own business.

Every time he says anything, say loudly enough for everyone to hear "why do you find it necessary to comment publicly about my personal life?". Do it every time until he is embarressed into keeping quiet.

I'd ask him how much he spent on gas when it was $4 a gallon. In one month I spent enough on gas to make a car payment on a Mercedes! Not only are you saving money, but you're also saving the environment. I would gladly take public transportation if it was available.

In some countries, especially European, public transportation is the only way to go. Think of NYC. Do you really want to drive from Brooklyn to Manhattan during rush hour??
