I know a man in nursing school who wears glasses for accessory and not for medical need. He told me he began doing so when he started working as an aid in a local hospital. He says that he believes people take him more seriously when he wears his glasses than not.
I have known him for years and never would have guessed that his glasses were not a prescription; those days he came in without them I assumed he was wearing contacts. Now I look around me and wonder how many other hospital staff are also wearing glasses for reasons other than poor eyesight.
I did have a colleague who was splashed in the eye with gastric juices when performing a G-tube feeding, and he said his glasses helped deflect some of the material. I don't need them, and I find myself pondering the benefits.
Those of you who wear glasses, do you find they are protective? If you wear both glasses and contacts, do you notice you make different impressions on others depending on your choice? Is there anyone who wears glasses and can admit to perfect vision?
Funny thing a few seconds ago there was an add for eyeglasses at the top of the page. No seriously don't get fake glasses for the fact it makes you think your taken more seriously. How you carry yourself and how professional you are will get you taken seriously.
You noticed the add, too? LOL! I was just reading the students page about book bags and low and behold.....BOOK BAGS GALORE out to the side of the post! Either my powers of observation are weakening because I've never noticed the relationship of the add to the posts, OR....they are watching us....shhhhh:cautious:
Well, might as well add to the masses. I didn't wear glasses until 4 years ago after I enrolled in an ASN program. It was an online, self-paced program. So, I did so much reading so quickly to be in and out of the program, that I ruined my eyes in the process. I went from no glasses to progressive lenses. If I never put them on, I'm fine for the day unless I try to read something. If I put them on for an hour or so and then take them off, I'm blind for the rest of the day. My latest eye exam was going to be a failure for sure. But to my surprise, there is no glaucoma, no legal blindness, no cataracts, and not even a remote chance at disability. I feel like Corporal Klinger trying to make it back to the states. Back to the drawing board.....
I truly believe I was taken more seriously when I wore glasses. That said, people are FRIENDLIER to me now that I am without. I had Lasik (twice actually.... long story) and it is true prettier people get treated better. People smile at me more and do nice things for me whereas before people ignored me or were rude. Not that I am gorgeous now. Just improved from what I looked like with glasses. Some people look great in glasses.... I looked awful. Anyway... I can't imagine getting glasses as a fashion accessory When I've gone through the true crap I have gone through over the past year with two lasik surgeries and continuing problems from those to be FREE of them...
As a side note... I don't recommend lasik.
But what's next? Wearing leg braces to impress people with your stamina? Fake hearing aid so you have an excuse to ignore people? Adding 'gray hair' or creating a fake receding hairline to give the impression of aged wisdom?
Fake braces are all the rage in Japan... don't believe me? look it up!!
As someone who can't see without her glasses or contacts, this whole idea is just ludicrous. Wear eye protection when you need it, lose the fake glasses if they are truly fake; you might "look" smart, but when people find out they're fake they'll just think you're DUMB.
...I did so much reading so quickly to be in and out of the program, that I ruined my eyes in the process...
Please tell me you are either kidding, exaggerating for effect, or not a nurse! You can not "ruin your eyes" by reading too much! More likely, the reading made you aware of the age-related difficulty in focusing up close (accommodation) that was happening anyway.

As fond as I am of BBC comedies,
I had a few pairs of "focusing" glasses in my early college says...I do have astigmatism; however, so small I could get LASIK surgery once I get a good vision plan...however, I can just pop in my "focusing" glasses though...
And I DON'T consider myself a "hipster", or a "hipster-goofus" either... (not calling anyone this-just want to make sure my post is intact...)
