"Fake" or Nonprescriptive Eyeglasses

Nurses Relations

Published

I know a man in nursing school who wears glasses for accessory and not for medical need. He told me he began doing so when he started working as an aid in a local hospital. He says that he believes people take him more seriously when he wears his glasses than not.

I have known him for years and never would have guessed that his glasses were not a prescription; those days he came in without them I assumed he was wearing contacts. Now I look around me and wonder how many other hospital staff are also wearing glasses for reasons other than poor eyesight.

I did have a colleague who was splashed in the eye with gastric juices when performing a G-tube feeding, and he said his glasses helped deflect some of the material. I don't need them, and I find myself pondering the benefits.

Those of you who wear glasses, do you find they are protective? If you wear both glasses and contacts, do you notice you make different impressions on others depending on your choice? Is there anyone who wears glasses and can admit to perfect vision?

I've had to wear glasses since I was 10, and they're a pain to deal with. I also have astigmatism in one eye so wearing contacts is too uncomfortable for me (one lens is way thicker than the other, it drives me nuts). I don't know why it should matter to me at all but it kind of annoys me when people wear non-prescriptions just for fun. Especially since the fakes are usually the same "hipster-y" style I've been rocking since 5th grade. Bah.

Hipsters....

I do wear needed glasses, but not as often as I should. They are a pain, and I can see ok enough most of the time. I find I am needing them more and more for computer work, homework etc. I have an astigmatism, driving at night is super hard becuase of the glares I constantly see. I'm considering contacts because glasses are such a pain, but I really have an aversion to shoving foreign objects in my eyeballs. I think eventually I will get contacts (when I am working and have insurance again) glasses are so annoying.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Who cares if someone want to wear non-prescriptive glasses? If they give the person more confidence, it's a much cheaper option than spending $$$ in therapy. Maybe some people think they look better with glasses than without. Non-prescriptive glasses are like jewelry for some. For cripes sake, are you going to gripe about the person who gets pierced ears? How about people who dye their hair to cover the grey? Makeup? Boob jobs? How about colored contact lenses that are non-prescriptive because they'd rather have blue eyes than brown?

People do these things all the time to help them feel good about themselves. There are so many more real issues to worry about than someone who doesn't wear prescriptive lenses.

This has to be one of the cattiest threads I've ever seen. I wear readers because my regular glasses annoy me, and I can't see as well with them as I can with plain old readers. I have several pairs: different styles and colors. I hate to think of the snark that would go on behind my back if I worked with the lot of you.

Oh, and FWIW, "hipster" would be the last thing anyone would say to describe me.

Wow, since I had LASIK people must really have changed their opinion of me and think I lost my intelligence and leadership qualities! Dang!

This is far from the cattiest thread I've read here.

I wear glasses because the police aren't fond of people with bad vision driving without them, I prefer my contacts though. I can't tell you if people take me more/less seriously with glasses. The only feedback I've gotten about my glasses was as a child (been wearing them since I was 7) from my peers, and most of it was not kind.

Yet my sister--who had perfect vision--was jealous of them and invented a case of farsightedness so she could get her own pair. It lasted four months before she got fed up with them.

I've worn fake glasses with my contact lenses...I wanted to try different looks but didn't feel like spending $400 per look. Much easier and cheaper to get $8 fakes.

I don't rely on fake glasses as PPE, though. Goggles or face shield, always.

And if someone wants to wear fake glasses, that's their business: no harm no foul. There's worse things they could be doing.

No, it's just ridiculous that people are passing judgement on others for such a ridiculous reason.

Eh, we pass judgment on others' behaviors and actions all the time. If I learn that someone wears glasses because they want to appear smarter, I'm going to pass a judgment that that person appears to have an inferiority complex. It's not like I'm going to rearrange my schedule to not be around the person or anything, it would just go in my mental catalogue under "Well, that's different."

TOS prevent me from stating what I think of people who judge others over such a trivial matter.

I think I need to go out and buy another pair of readers.

Well, then it's a good thing we have the TOS to keep you polite. :)

I just got Lasik to never wear contacts or glasses again, who cares what people thought of me in them, they were obnoxious, working in an ICU, at times sweating and trying to keep glasses on my face. No thanks.
