Question about TWU

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi everyone I'm new to this post,

I'm currently living in Virginia but plan to move back to Texas once my husband separates from the military I am also a veteran. I plan to take my pre-req in Virginia and then transfer to TWU. Do any of you know if it's really hard to get in there nursing program? What all do you have to do to be accepted? Any information would be great

Thank you

Nursing programs here in Tx are very competitive. You'd do fine to do prereqs there or, if you wanted to save money you could do them here..as Texas is MUCH cheaper as an education option than Virginia is...I know, I graduated from college in Va, and I'm continuing my education in Tx.

The only thing you can do is follow TWUs steps to admission listed on their website -

http://www.twu.edu

That will give you an idea of what you can do to get in to nursing school. Make sure your grades are well above average, it's absolutely ridiculous in my opinion but your cumulative gpa has to be something in the 3.85 range or better. Ridiculous.

You also might think of getting a job in the industry if you aren't already employed, as a tech or something. That gives you a little hospital experience and will look good on your nursing school application.

Good luck.

Well thanks for the info. I sound stupid but what exactly is a tech? Do I need any kind of education for that?

if I have a 3.5 overall and like a 3.3 science gpa, should I apply to twu or save money and apply elsewhere

Actually, TWU only looks at your nursing pre-req GPA and NET score as consideration for admission. So having any industry experience wouldn't help your application. The application is done online, and there is not anywhere you could even try to sneak this information in if you wanted to. I guess it's good in a way, because it makes the selection process extremely objective, however, it doesn't give you an opportunity to show off what makes you more special and different from another applicant who may have grades and NET scores that are exactly the same as yours.

Bottom line, if you want to get into TWU, try your best to get as close as you can to a 4.0 on your nursing pre-reqs and get a high NET score. I don't know what the GPA cutoff is this year, but it's always very competitive.

And it doesn't matter where you take your pre-reqs, just as long as they are equivalent to what TWU requires. I would double-check your courses with an advisor, though, just to make sure since you are out of state. For schools in Texas, they have course equivalency lists, which makes it easy...I was able to do all my pre-reqs at a community college.

i can tell you that the average cutoff gpa for most semesters is 3.7-3.8. if i understand it correctly if you take your pre-classes at twu they will add like 0.4 to your gpa ( which i'm sure has open the door for some that might not get to go otherwise) when applying to nursing school. i go to twu but i'm pre-law not nursing....

if i have a 3.5 overall and like a 3.3 science gpa, should i apply to twu or save money and apply elsewhere

Whats considered a "high" NET score for TWU?

If you want to save yourself huge buckets of money apply to go to North Central Texas College. www.nctc.edu It is almost as hard to get into their RN program as TWU but with half the cost. I have two small kids so they have worked out really well for me. TWU also offers a bridge program for people who get their RN somewhere else.

Personally I have lived in Denton my whole life and have never wanted to attend TWU. SO when I finish up my RN I plan on going to Midwestern State University. Good luck where ever you go, Dusty

Regarding TWU--they have great nursing advisors who can answer many of your questions. Typically, the GPA required to get in may be high, but not always. When I taught there we had some semesters with the highest GPA being less than 3.5-3.6. So, call and ask to speak to an advisor, ignore rumors, and get the facts. I wish you well in your endeavors & hang in there. It's really worth the challenges & struggles.

:uhoh3: I know you must be confused by now!!!! I am a current student at TWU:roll I would be more than glad to assist you with questions you may have regarding admissions.

First, please allow me to refer you to the TWU CON webpage, http://www.twu.edu/nursing/

(CON=COLLEGE OF NURSING)

Do you currently posses a Bachelor's degree? If so, they have a fast track program you may be interested in. If not...:o

Admissions is once a semester. The GPA and NET test are the only factors reviewed when applying to TWU CON. Work related experiences does not help AT ALL and there is no interview either!! Thank God, bc I wouldn't of made it!!

The NET (nursing entrance test) is a preliminary test that has to be completed along with the application prior to deadline. The test covers various sections but the ones you are to be concerned with are Math and reading. The math is not challenging-you have to College Algebra any way so that prepares you. The reading is similar to the common day TASK test. The ERI website provides a study guide which helped me prepare for the exam.(http://www.eriproduct.com/detail.aspx?ID=1) The following is a link the schedule for the upcoming available test, if you already near that point.

http://www.twu.edu/nursing/programs/bs/download_center/nursing_entrance_test.pdf

BTW-tech is usually a PCT which stands for patient care technician, basically that is the person that assist the patient with daily activities such as bathing, grooming, and making pt bed so forth.) You do need a certificate or the first semester of CON completed to work this position.

The contact person at TWU-Dallas is Jancice Anderson, she is the coordinator of admissions, she can be reached at JTurnermail.gif.

You may want to use her as your first line of information. She will be able to tell you exactly what classes you need(which can be found at http://www.twu.edu/nursing/programs/bs/download_center/DenDal%20Prerequisite%20Core%202007.pdf) and their equivalencies to the the ones in your area.

I hope this gets you started in the right path! I know it is a lot of information, I remember how confused and lost I was when I decided I wanted to go there. Their website provides lots of information that may be able to answer most of questions. But please do not hesitate to ask me any questions!! Good Luck on your new adventure!! Oh and about the GPA, some people got in with a 3.5GPA part-time because so many other people fail to complete their paperwork correctly or in time or just simply do not meet the requirements. I had a 3.85, but they took as low as 3.65 for full-time students that semester. Again Good Luck

(Oh yeah and the person that said something about taking the classes at Denton TWU, it does help with the GPA 0.4 BUT it is not worth it to my opinion, you would save more money taking classes at a community college and you would just need to put a little bit more effort in your classes to make better grades PS...The nursing school of TWU is in Dallas, the main campus is in Denton-THEY ARE NOT CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER)

I have one thing to add. When you call and speak with an advisor (which you should definitely do) please be sure to ask if they will accept all of the pre-req credits you will be obtaining in another state. It will be helpful if you have very specific information regarding the school you are attending, and the courses you are taking. Include course numbers, and descriptions.

moncj66-just a sugeestion, if you already have a 3.5 overall i would go ahead and apply for twu if you have meet all the pre-req's. while you are waiting on admissions go ahead and take over a class that you bombed, it doesn't have to be a science class, just any class. i took over 2 classes i made a c in and it helped my gpa greatly!!! just a suggestion. you never know the cutoff each semester until after acceptance so give it a try and if you do not make it in the first time, you will have retaken the other classes and bumped up your gpa enough to be accepted the next semester!!! (even if you are accepted the first time around, the retakes never hurt your gpa as long as you did better, may i suggest an online or mini mester class at a community college if you do retake any clases?)good luck!!!
