Question about CUNY schools

U.S.A. New York

Published

I was under the impression that the tuition was the same at all the CUNY schools (Hunter, LaGuardia, etc.). As a non-degree student at LaGuardia I am paying $160 per credit. A non-degree student at Hunter is $250 per credit. I should be registered as a non-degree student, correct? I am there to complete my prereqs but I plan on going to nursing school somewhere else.

Any advice or input would be appreciated!

thanks

The tuition is not the same at all CUNY school's; Two year school tuition is cheaper than the four year school's.

I am in the process of registereing at Kingsborough to take my pre-reqs - admission people tell me different story every time. First they said I need to apply as a Transfer student,( I have a Bac degree), then they said - register as a Non-Degree student. Then, after I wa about to register as a Non-Degree, one of the admission guys said that if I do that I won'tbe able to take classes like Chem, A&P and stuff...

At this point I am not sure what they do to my application, I submitted my Transfer app, my transcripts, and ndicated that I want to take those classes without enroling into their nursing program. Waiting to see what happens!

I would appreciate any help from those who took pre-reqs at CUNY.

Thanks for sharing. It's soooo frustrating trying to get a straight answer for questions that seem so basic. I hadn't even considered that non-degree students wouldn't be allowed to take certain courses; please let me know if that's true (that would be INSANE if it was!). Anyway, we can't be alone in this, can't we? Surely other non-degree students have had similar difficulties trying to complete their prereqs in a timely manner. The latest development in my story is that I JUST learned this week that non-degree students have last pick when registering for their classes. Arrrggggghhhh.

I went to LAGuardia & nassau for pre reqs & I registered as matriculated student so I wouldn't pay the non-degree fee. Chose pre-nursing, or some other degree to saved cost & further headacehes with the CUNY system.

The key thing to me is that you should register as a matriculated student. They can't make you remain in the school if you don't want to. Finish your pre-requisites and move on if you can find another school to accept you.

Well, I should have mentioned before that I have to take SEVEN prereqs before I am eligible to apply for nursing school. If you want to pay per credit, you can only take up to 12 credits as a matriculated student. Anything over that is considered "full-time" and you have to pay a flat rate of $1400 a semester. I can not go to school full-time because I work 9-5, monday thru friday.

This whole thing is getting so complicated and I feel like it should be so simple-- I work full-time and I want to complete my pre-requisites in the evening/weekend so I can eventually quit my job and go to nursing school full-time. Why is this so hard????? arggggggghhhh!!

Not having someone to guide you through is frustrating and especially when you end up making mistakes that could've been avoided with just a simple "head on". Let me guide you through this degree/non degree concern you have. At any CUNY school, your admission to the college doesn't mean you are a nursing student. You become a pre-nursing student. You take 4/5 of the pre-reqs your college requires and when completed with them/expecting to complete them, you apply for candidacy and if get accepted ,start program or else change major/transfer as per your choice.Having a full time job shouldn't put you at any disadvantage because the pre-reqs are better done slowly & carefully coz if you mess up , your chances slip dramatically for acceptance. If you are at Laguardia, change your status from non-degree to degree. That way you don't have to pay double of what a degree student pays.YOU CAN BE A PART TIME DEGREE STUDENT.If you have no previous college credits, here is what I suggest you to do. Register for two courses for spring, take one in summer and in the fall take the last prereq course (and apply for candidacy same time).Once you get accepted, attend school FT.

Hope that helped.

haven't logged in in a while and just saw this... thanks so much for your advice.

I am in a cuny community college nursing program right now, cuny is a nightmare to navigate, believe me I wish I had gone to Cochran or Beth Israel, there is no one to help you navigate the ins and out, but I am in my second semester of clinicals and I am ready to quit, this is a harsh way to do nursing school, although they tell me they make good nurses, it is just one hurdle after another.

Good luck to you take your pre reqs and look at the private schools in the area and run run run when you are ready to go to the clinical portions

Basically, I would say the same for those that wish to invest money into a private school...run run,RUN and transfer those CUNY credits to them and get your money's worth...:banghead::no:

I was going through a similar situation my sister in law just actually graduated from adelphi she told me to take my prerequisite courses at a school affliated with adelphi called Iaa its a little more expensive then cuny 350 per credit but its basically cut and dry and they put you into adelphi once you finish.
