Public Breastfeeding

Nurses General Nursing

Published

In a discussion I had with my brother in law today (who is a future nurse!), I learned he is uncomfortable with public breastfeeding unless there is a blanket involved. I know some folks wouldn't even like it with a blanket! I strongly feel that, as nurses, we should be doing what we can to support and advocate for breastfeeding and shed it in a positive light. I couldn't believe that a health care professional would feel differently. Obviously, this is coming from the United States (sigh).

I'm someone that usually works to make people feel comfortable in situations, but if my baby needs to be fed and some guy doesn't like it, well then he doesn't have to look! My baby comes first. That's how I feel about it. Guys will say that we shouldn't expose our breasts because they are too sexual, then agree that breastfeeding isn't sexual, but still say that we should hide it.....I cannot follow the circular reasoning.

I want to raise sons who know that breasts, as sexually appealing as they may be to them when they are older, are made to feed babies. That a uterus carries babies and lady partss birth them. I believe that this gives men a truer, deeper respect for women and for all human beings ... our bodies are not just sex objects! I saw a funny T-shirt that said -- Breasts: Not just for selling cars anymore!

I wanted to see what other nurses thought about this, on a personal level as well as a public health level.

Her breasts are HARDLY dirty items and it's not like they are squirting all over the place.

:chuckle Thank goodness!

I'm generally curious here, what do your kids think breasts are for?

Well, my kids are both 7 months old and are bottle fed so right now they don't even know what a breast is!

As far as the BF in restaurants, I'm only speculating here, but perhaps that whole thing has to do with that breast milk is a human body fluid, and that depending on the woman and how discreet she is, her breasts even WITH a baby on it might be VERY unappetizing. I dunno, just speculating. I haven't seen a woman BFing in a restaurant ever.

I have seem women just lift their shirt entirely exposing both breasts, especially in the summer when she is going bra-less. I've seen that probably at least 5 times. They are out there. And it's THOSE women that I feel they should be discreet and THAT is where my problem lies, I guess.

When I was wearing a pullover or other unfriendly BF shirt, I would often expose both breasts unintentionally while floundering with getting twins latched on. But I always breast fed in a quiet corner, away from the general public. I did this so I can BF in peace and quiet anyway. For me BF isn't about displaying my right to do so but about bonding with my child. I want privacy when I bond and I like eating in a quiet environment. So I guess I don't understand those women who seem to choose to BF in busy, crowded areas in the center of everything. I've always been able to find a quiet spot.

Well, I am a mom, and now my baby prefers to take the food off of my platae rather that out of my breast (at 10 months), I do have a stance on this.

I firmly believe that a woman should not be foreced to have to feed her baby in a bathroom (although many places are coming up with "mother's rooms", to encourage breastfeeding but privately. At the same time I would not feel comfortable seeing, or feeding a baby, when any part of the breast is visible.

Not because the breast are a sexual thing which in western society you can't just ignore; but because breast just like other parts of the body are private and I think should be kept that way. It is no one's business what a person has beneath their clothes, period. And the stance that if you don't like it don't look really doesn't cut it, because it's not that simple. In that it seems like a person in saying if I take my breast out to feed my baby in front of you, if you don't care to see turn away, and if you do tune it. I know it isn't meant that way but still. The lady parts is overall a passage for children, and the breast a tool for nourishment, but would you sit on a bench in a mall pull off you underwear, and let that out for all to see.

This is not meant to sound childish or trivialize this important issue. In situations lke this I just same put the shoe on another foot, and look at it that way.

I don't get the lady parts analogy at all. We are talking about the necessity of exposing a bit of the breast for a specific reason, that being to nourish a child. What, exactly, essential function would we be fulfilling if we were to expose our entire lady parts by pulling off our underwear?

That question ought to be directed to those fools who insist on doing that on "Girls Gone Wild"? I'd love to know the answer to that, myself.

If I was about to give birth in the mall I would do it in a heartbeat. Baby's gotta come out somehow. Luckily, most of us don't give birth in the mall. I did prefer my nice quiet room with my midwife and nurse. But hey if it is time, it's time. Same with nursing a baby. If the baby wants to eat he or she doesn't generally like to wait.

Then only function, imho, would be if birth was imminent (sp?). Can't think of another reason to do so in the mall. Otherwise you would get arrested.

The difference is that if I went to Applebee's Restaurant or out to go Christmas shopping at Toys R Us, I wouldn't be seeing your first photo. (especially here where it's only 5 degrees!)

I'm sure we'd all agree that the first photo reveals too much for our taste in a general environment. It still doesn't negate the premise that breasts and genitals are private areas not really meant to be pubically displayed, at least in our culture.

Secondly, the women in the photo actually are physically and aesthetically appealing. Again, not all BF mothers are and I'd rather not see their breasts!!

Well, to be specific, we urinate from that area and that is quite essential, imo!! :chuckle
