Sometimes school nursing sucks
It's one of the absolute best parts of this job as far as I am concerned. I get to relax, spend time with my family and recharge my batteries. 19 more days for me. Can't wait!

Breaking the Rules to Save a Life
I told my husband on about day 7 of this job, before I had stock epi and standing orders for epi, if it ever comes down to it and I see a kid in anaphylaxis with no order, I'm using someone else's epi pen. It may mean I lose my job and/or my license but I can't just sit there and do nothing when I have something that might help. He agreed. Thankfully I have never had that situation come up but it could totally happen.

Exclude for vomiting
My policy for return is generally 24 hour vomit free but there are exceptions. If you go home @ 11:00 after vomiting, then take a nap, eat a hearty dinner and breakfast and are ready to go in the morning without another episode of vomiting and no other signs of being sick, I'm good with you coming back. But you can't skip lunch and dinner, sleep 15 hours, wake up and eat 1/2 an english muffin on the way to school and come back. That's not going to cut it for me.

Snacks?
We don't have a cafeteria. I give out snacks to anyone who forgot one at home. The good thing is a forgotten snack then clues us in that the child probably didn't bring lunch so we can call home for someone to bring them something by lunchtime. My snacks are donated to me by PTA, other staff members, my superintendent, myself, etc.

Spring Break is Over...Countdown to Summer
38 after today!

hot glue guns
Oh hot glue guns. I always cringe when I smell them because I KNOW I'm going to see a few kiddos that day.
-
It's P-day
Kidzcare I was thinking Pacer Day too. ? I do the 5th grade girls video (Nurse and Health Teacher here) but the PE teacher does the boys. Always an interesting day. Good luck!

STOP!!!
I always call this the "Get Out of Jail Free Card", and I'm not shy about telling parents they gave it to their kid and there's almost no way they ever stay in school when they get it. Waste of everyone's time.
-
Phone Calls
I always figure if they're going to get off the bus and mom look at them and say "What happened..." then I need to call. And some parents grill their kids when they get home, looking for all the ways their child was wronged during the day. I usually call on these kiddos too just as a CYA.

Got thanked by EMS/Police and Mom!
Great job!

We're back!!!
Ok I am so glad we are back. I was missing my peeps!

FARAWYN, School Nurse to the rescue!
This of course is the correct answer. Those babies have little molecules of life in them! There's nothing a few saltines can't fix!

May the odds be ever in your favor...
It will be crazy in here all week until the 1/2 day Friday, then it will be crickets. Ahhhhh.
-
Would you? Do you?
Elementary School here so, so far not an issue I've dealt with BUT I do get lots of pierced ears issues and I deal with all those so I probably would allow it in my office. Being HS students I would expect them to really do the care themselves but have no problem giving them supplies, helping, etc.

Lack of Manners
My students learn quickly that if you bark a word at me, I just bark one back. At first they are confused but then I'll ask, Oh did you have a question? Bad manners drive me CRAZY!!!
-
Diastat on field trips
Nope. We send it with a Nurse or the parent attends the field trip.

Administer OTC medications or No?
I have an OTC form that parents can check off the meds they authorize me to use. It must be signed by the parents and their physician.
