I have yet to figure out, why with the Press Gainey Survey which get mailed to former patient's why on earth it is not based on 1-6 scores. My rationale no one is perfect there how many realize that our units/hospitals expect us to receive all 5 , I say if it were raised to 6 then we would perhaps get more 5. The fact that any raises can also be affected by the press gainey really burns my hide. The highest score is perceived as perfect. I don't know anyone who is perfect.
What are you thoughts?

DH recently filled one out after surg. They do not put anything in there so a real change can occur.
There is no place asking about staffing. He could figure out it was inadequate.
No place to answer about communication issues. He could barely understand many caregivers.
The questions seem to hit at the lowest common denominator and give no room for an informed consumer. It was very disappointing that so little emphasis was on his expectation as a consumer versus what happened.
Unfortunately his experience was not positive. I don't think the survey will change any of his concerns. I even called the facility and discussed his concerns. The form letter I got back indicated the nurses had gotten a talking to. What an "easy" solution. They still did not get the issues were not the nurses not knowing or wanting to do the right thing. There were not enough nurses to do the job.
This survey is so biased towards the employer under the guise of improving care. There are not enough words to say how it can be manipulated by the employer for their own gain and to the detriment of the nurse.
I am sorry you are placed under such a microscope while to people who could facilitate change, dictate, but don't have to change.

Press Ganey is really a joke. There are so many things in there we can't control, such as whether the food is yummy or how the drs. behave. The worst part, IMHO, is if we really want a good Press Ganey it makes sense to ignore anybody demented or delirious, or who can't write much, or whose English is not very good, and spend all our time catering to those most likely to fill out the survey. This is not what I went into nursing for.

This is another example of the tail wagging the dog. We are changing things in our department trying to get better scores and we already were doing great but no, we have to do something. The biggest thing so far is that our Maternity Center has thrown out the visiting rules and regs b/c a couple folks were upset that they couldn't have all 18 of their friends and family members with their children in their room at one time. We have just thrown infection control and patient safety out the window here for a POSSIBLE increase in our score.
Dietary, who historically gets the LOWEST rating of all in our system, has not been required to change a thing. Nothing. Their dismal ratings are figured in with our department patient satisfaction rating (typically really good) as well as all of med/surg (who are working very hard to make changes to get their scores up) and we are being told the hospital reimbursement will be based on these scores as will be our raises. The whole things stinks.

I second that part... people admitted at night cannot get food where I am working now because we usually have cold boxed, cereal adn applesauce (along with the usual juice and milk)
I finally started telling them to complain to dietary because I have nooooo control over what food or lack thereof......
I thought that there was a spot on press gainey for write in comments...
There is a spot for write in comments. I usually tell my patients please send back the survey. Let us know what you think, administration will listen to you as the consumer. I once told a patient. Who complained about the tv's in the room. Write it in, the only way we will ever get new tv's is if enough patient's' complain about it.
I have notice many patient's who have written in that the nurses appeared to awfully busy with too much to do.
Most write ins tend to be complants about something , rather than compliments.

We've gotten pts complaing that the nurses seemed to be too busy too. Well, duh.
When patient's complain of nurses appear to be too busy. I take it as a compliment.
Much better than the patient's who have written " It sounded like the nurses were having a party at the nursing station as there was so much laughter and noise" it was written in regards to the nightshift.

Press Gainey is a joke, Plain and simple. It is a wate of money that hospitals pay. To tell us how we are seen by the patients doing our jobs. If Admin would cut out a few meetings get off their buttocks once in a while, come out of their offices and talk to us and the patients once in awhile they may get the answers they are seeking. If a survey is so all mighty important make your own. Just how I see it, have a nice day everyone.
