Prerequisites .. 2 years or 3 years to finish?

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm a freshman starting Fall 2010 in UTA and I'm facing a dilemma with my prereqs right now =( . So far I've taken some of my prereqs in the summer before I graduated from high school and accumulated about 24 credit hours, which all transferred to UTA. I was over joyed because I thought I'd be able to finish my prereqs in 2 years, but I went to orientation and learned that I had to take some classes that weren't even included in the BSN prerequisites handout! I was really bummed when I left because I had a choice of either finishing my prereqs in 2 years or 3 years.

My problem is that I was hoping to finish my prerequisites in 2 years, taking classes in the summer also. But if I want to finish it in 2 years, that means I'll have to double on my science classes. UTA is requiring us to take a year of Biology, and then A&P 1 and 2, Microbiology and Chemistry. So If I want to finish it in 2 years, I'd have to take A&P 1 and Micro in 1st sem of Sophomore and A&P 2 and Chem 2nd sem of Sophomore. Isn't that a little bit too much? Are these classes super hard? I had all A's in A&P, AP Bio and AP Chem in highschool but I really don't know how hard it'll be in college. Thus I'm worried about doubling on the science courses my Sophomore year since I know in Nursing School you need an excellent GPA.

Another problem is I really don't want to take 3 years on finishing my prereqs because it's such a long time and 1/2 of that semester I won't have any classes left and so it'll just be a big huge semester void. I was wondering if I finish my prereqs in 2 1/2 years, can I apply to nursing school the following semester? I know in UTA that they take people per semester for nursing school.

My situation will be working Part-Time, study study study, commuting about an hour w/traffic back and forth and I'll be taking 4 classes, 13 credit hours my first semester.

I wanted to talk to my nursing counselor but my academic counselor said that I can only talk to her after a semester goes by but I really need advice right now >.

Many thanks,

I know that for me all the pre-reqs will take a year and a half at brookhaven

and then the nursing program takes 16 months to complete I have all the same pre-reqs as you and i also will be taking more than one science class a semester. But as long as you balance yourself you should be fine with taking double science.

Congrats on getting accepted

And best of luck to you!!!!

Maybe I'll see you there when I go to get my RN to BSN there

(I didnt take my sats in time:scrying:)

i finished mine in a year - a year and half, from fall 2008-fall 2009, took spring 2010 off to give birth and apply for nursing school, go in on my first try into city college san francisco, starting fall 2010

If your high school AP classes were rigorous enough that you passed the AP tests then the college classes won't be harder than your high school AP classes.

Two science/lab classes per term plus a couple of other classes plus working part time is a normal load.

It sounds like you are well prepared for college level classes.

I think you can do it! I took AP chem, A&P, AP bio and AP english in high school and all the teachers said that it is equally as hard as it would be in any other college. I'm sure you'll do just fine :) I'm also taking a&p 2 and chem 2 together.

I took Micro and Chem in the same semester. They have a lot of the same material so it was helpful.

What do you think about taking the CLEP for Biology instead?

Thanks for the reassurance everyone.

@Mama2fiveboys - Lol I made a 1 in AP biology .. so I'm pretty sure I can't CLEP out of it =(

@Saysfaa - Thanks so much! I didn't know that was a normal load o.o; .. Now I feel better taking both sophomore year.
